The new lighting scheme feels wrong.
I hate to say something bad about this game because I like it so much, but the new lighting is ruining the game for me.

I thought the old lighting was perfect. It really felt like night time, and when you took out the substations it really felt like you'd knocked out the power in the area.

Now it doesn't really feel like night time anymore. Everything is so neon and bright, and when you destroy the substations you hardly notice it and sometimes the pools of light under the streetlights don't even go away, they just get a little dimmer.

I know neon is kind of part of the cyberpunk look, but it's just way overdone now. I really wish I could choose to play with the old lighting. It was way more immersive the way it was.

Also the way the shadows draw in at the edges of the map now are really distracting.

At least I got a lot of hours out of it. I don't know if I can play this game anymore. All the game mechanics are the same, but the mood is broken, and that was one of the big reasons I kept playing it. I really liked the way the music and the lighting complemented each other and created this cool retro-future mood.

What were you guys going for with this new lighting scheme? What was it about the old one that you thought was lacking?

Sincerely,

A big Brigador fan.

I have to agree, I love this game and have over 70 hours in it but now I find it really difficult to play. The new lighting scheme is just too much and the pop-in effect described above is really jarring.

I'll admit that the new lightning is an acquired taste. Personally, I think it's closer to a cyberpunk ambiance but the universe is definitely more dieselpunk than anything else.
I'm not completely against it because it gives a sort of surreal atmosphere that is interesting visually but, yeah, at the end of the day there was nothing wrong with the original lightning...

I totally agree, this is not the look I fell in love with. The developers should really stop changing such important things at whim.

For now, we can go back to the previous version through the Brigador beta tab in Steam, but who knows for how long that version will still be available. They should make the older version permanently available if you ask me.

Maybe they'll implement an option to swith between old and new if we ask nicely.
I'd really like to understand the decision behind redoing the lightning in such a radicale way though. Quite odd, at this time of the game's life, to change so radically the art direction.

I don't mind it, but I could take it or leave it.
Occasionally the lighting looks really odd, like this: screenshot

They have, but the changes have now made it really really obvious on certain maps.

Not really a fan at first glance either. Will play around with it more later but it feels too bright overall.

That's what I have noticed as well. Randomised lighting is great, but the way most buildings and the like have an unnaturally coloured glow from no nearby light sources just looks really damn weird.

Hate to say anything bad about the game, but I have to concur with this thread. The new lighting just looks off.

EDIT: Gone through a few maps to test out the lighting features, and I definitely like it a lot more now. Although the more unnatural colours like green and the neon pink/red still look a bit odd to me with how it casts over everything.

I really like the more oddball lighting presets, but I think they might come up a bit too often as is. Maybe if the list were populated with a few more "standard" presets.

I'm getting much faster loading times with the new lighting system, and I don't really notice too much of a difference.

That'd be great! Pretty please, devs?

Or at least keep the previous version with the older lighting model available indefinitely.

The lighting model hasn't changed, these are just new settings which take better advantage of the lighting system. I believe the old ones are still available in the debug menu, but I'm not 100% sure atm.

Hey there and thanks for your reply!

I might have used the wrong words (lighting model), but I'm pretty sure the lighting has changed. The patch notes mention it quite clearly as well:

"This update features a complete revamp of in-game lighting, ..."

It's also rather visible to the naked eye, hence the existence of this thread.

How can we access the debug menu to switch between the old and new?

If the lighting model hasn't changed then an option for displaying only the "classic" lighting would be greatly appreciated.

I like the new lighting.
