Why a second game?
You (Shiny Shoe) already made this game once, what was the motivation behind making it again? I very much enjoyed the first game and want to know the intention behind the second.
Is this intended to replace the first game, as a sort-of upgrade to it?

Thanks

Edit: Getting a lot of cynical replies, and many who interpreted my question being asked in bad faith, thanks to everyone who answered genuinely. I hope we get something of an official answer.

After reading responses here & elsewhere here's what I gathered:
New & more complex mechanics, while keeping those of the first game makes for a step up in complexity from the first. A solid theory would be it stemmed from many ideas on how to expand the first game, until it grew big enough to warrant a whole new game balanced around the additional mechanics. This complexity also suggests that the target audience is Monster Train 1 players, and that this game is intended to replace the original. They've taken the opportunity to feature the story/lore more prominently this time around as a bonus!

Did you try the demo? I can't speak for them of course, but based on the demo experience I think they wanted to try new ideas (Room cards, Equipment cards, Active abilities, etc..) and continue the story and narrative as well (it picks up after the end of the first game).

That's been my take-away so far, and I'm excited to see where the story goes and how all the new cards and mechanics play out!
Why slay the spire 2?????

There's new mechanics and tribes and an updated artstyle. Why not have a sequel?
"If already one X game, why dev make X 2?!"
The opposite of "If X is so great, why isn't there X 2?" meme.

Not the most efficient clown award farming strat, but less rude than average and I can respect that.
Why Diablo4 why Civ7 why FF14? Why not Inkbound 2? Answer: money income.

Looks very close to the first game and should of been an expansion in reality and i wouldn't be surprised if it was originally gonna be.

Why does any game have a sequel?

Asking why Monster Train has a second game is pretty valid. The first one had much more potential and they dropped it for that MTX game. Then they dropped the MTX stuff and are now coming back to a MT2.

So imo that's why a second game: MT1 had plenty of room to grow and they abandoned it, so now they're coming back to rectify. And hopefully leaving the MTX stuff off.
People are always so hilariously cynical. They didn't "abandon" the game, they released it as a full game not even in early access, they did major free updates adding more content, they even did an expansion DLC. Then they moved on to new projects. Now enough time has passed that they're utilizing all the ideas they thought of on how to make a similar game but better for a sequel.
As an indie dev myself, projects can only be made and paid attention to if you feed the people who are making them. Otherwise there are no games to be made.

U guys are ratioing the dude but he does have a point. The demo just feels too much like the first game. Like it could just be a DLC for it.

I don't see this necessarily as a bad thing though. I like the new mechanics, and the first game is awesome with a fun gameplay loop. It's too early to say it, they are still fleshing out.

Eh, not really. There are big changes to the mechanics of the game, namely the Deployment phase replacing the Banner Priority draw system, and it's a completely new slate of enemies and bosses.

Add to that five wholly new clans, with new mechanics, new soundtrack, new additions like the Pyre Hearts, and it's far more than 'just a DLC'
Clown farming.
