What exactly was the goal of 50 Blessings?
I thought they just wanted to kill the Russians but assassinating both the Russian and American presidents, assuming they committed both murders, seems pretty extreme. Not only that, but if Russia had already bombed one city, why wouldn't 50 Blessings expect a massive nuclear backlash if they assassinated their leader? Or maybe they did and just didn't care?

50B was very against the Russo-American Coalition, which is essentially a truce between the ruskies and US after the nuke in order to repair relations. Such a coalition must've been supported by the US president, which made him a target of 50B. Perhaps that was the Colonel's hope that there'd be a nuclear attack following the coup, and that was sort of his final plan.

I had completely forgotten about the Russo-American Coalition.

If you've played the secret level The Abyss and the intro to Withdrawal you may have noticed the headquarters had very thick walls, the thickest of the game, therefore 50 Blessings was probably trying to start a nuclear war because they held out in a bomb shelter.

Thick walls won't save you from a nuclear attack. You're gonna need thick skin for that.
