Lore in a nutshell. The monsters are made by beings from another dimension. The dimension they are from is the one that patterson drives use to warp through space. The being dislike this so they send in the monsters to destroy the drives so that humans can't come into their dimension. Have you seen Pacific Rim?, Evolve pretty much just altered Pacific Rims story a bit and boom, Evolve.
Though, I do agree that if this is it, I would release everything I had on it, though I'm sure 2K could pull some IP coup with it if they realy wanted to be tards about it... "That's OUR IP! You can't release that!"
