Karja Balta
new to ys, are you able to choose your party or are they predetermined? she seems worth killing more than anything based on her description and intro of the demo.

Besides in a few instances you will play as both Karja and Adol. Adol does have a few sections throughout where you have to play as him.

When both Karja and Adol is around, you can switch between them at will however. There are some mechanics in place that encourage switching between them in combat, as well as some light puzzle elements that require you to switch to the proper character.

Before Ys 7 they were solo games starring only Adol. In Ys 7 - 9 you choose your party members. Starting with X you play as a duo of Adol and Karja.

Do those have more likable characters?

I'd say if you play a bit more, her personality is revealed better so you might warm up (maybe)

Maybe, not sure how they justify extorting, hurting and killing innocent people

Man, it's weird how this is nearly an exact duplicate of that other thread.

For the record, a dude who has been repeatedly caught smuggling passengers through your territory isn't innocent. If anything, he's lucky he got away with it once.

Didn't see that post. Nor that he was smuggling, but that he didn't pay her was why she killed him.
BTW don't tell the Americans that
