About the Performance
Hi, I've recently bought and installed Torment: Tides of Numenera. I am aware that it's still on early access and its performace wouldn't really be great compared to a finished game. Moreover, I saw in Patch 1 notes that a lot of things have been improved.

However, the first part of the game, where you attune yourself with the Tides, is lagging so much. I spent almost an hour just waiting for the sorrows to appear, to finish their turns, to do that charging thingy, etc. I fell asleep waiting for it to be done, and when I woke up, the game is not even moving! I had to force restart my lappy.

My question is: is this really how it performs on early access, or does it have something to do with my system?

I am running core i3 4GB of RAM, with Intel HD 4000 graphics. I know this is not supposed to be used for gaming but I can run Pillars of Eternity and Wasteland 2 without any problems in this system (and at 40-50fps too). And since T:ToN is running on "Pillars of Eternity technology", I was expecting minor lags, minor performance issues (w/ respect to it being on early access) but then I get an unmoving frame!

I need an answer from the developer saying that this is really just the game in development.

PS -- I have posted some screenshots with a graphical glitch (I don't know if this has something to do with my system or with the game being on Early Access)

I managed to finish the character creation and entered that part of the game where you meet your first two party members. The game becomes unplayable! 1-7fps on average (based on the steam-built FPS counter). Again, does this have something to do with the game being in Early Access, or my system is just too weak? (But i do meet the minimum system requirements!)

here the screenshot of the graphical glitch: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=633479771

I get the occasional freeze, but nothing like what you're describing, so specs definitely matter.
I'd say it's a bit of both though. I predict a lot of optimizations in future patches, so I'd recommend just trying again later on.

I gave up trying to play it for the time being until it gets some performance tweaks.

Yes, I'd probably do that too. Thanks for answering, man.

Your system is using an Intel integrated GPU (graphics chip). Unfortunately, Intel's integrated graphics have a history of driver bugs and incompatibilities with games, and this is even more the case given Torment isn't officially out yet in its final form.

While Torment does not yet officially have a set of system requirements, we generally would expect Intel GPUs to struggle with performance and they are definitely on the low end of things. The lack of driver support from Intel may also be a cause of crashes until its own driver software is updated to support the game, too, as well.

Would you agree though that it is the combination of the game being in its early stages (which of course means its not yet optimized for a lot of systems) as well as my system being too weak? Because I can run POE and Wasteland 2 perfectly fine, and I'd probably just need an update from Intel.

By the way, thanks for answering. Few developers do it.

4GB RAM might also be a problem. While I'm running the alpha on GNU/Linux with Wine, so it's not necessarily 100% comparable, I've seen Torment use a lot more than 4GB (more like 5GB or 6GB) on my system.

My system also has only 4GB of RAM, so it's swapping a lot. I assume yours is as well, which makes it all quite slow. Especially when the fragments appear, there I have minute-long freezes as well.

Do you mean:

a. that the game, in it's current state, is not yet optimized to be played for 4GB Ram systems but given more time in production, it eventually will, and the finished product will be optimized for 4GB systems as well? or

b. It will not work properly with 4gb ram system even when the game is actually finished, and the system requirement of 4gb ram in the store page will eventually be revised?

Thanks!

Well, I can't speak for the devs, but I am certainly hoping for a). And I think they have said as much, too.

Yeah, all I think all I gotta do is wait for the game to be developed further. Thanks for the time in replying, man.

Kind of both! It's not likely Intel graphics will be supported for final release. That said, will it work? Probably, you just may not be getting an ideal gameplay experience.

Thank you very much for answering. Good luck with the development, guys. I will take note of what you said. I do hope it gets released soon so I may try.

If they add an option to turn off or really tone down any and all environmental animations and effects like smoke/fire/stuff moving around in the environment we will see a HUGE boost in performance.

The unity engine just seems to be a hog when it comes to this kind of stuff as is evidenced very clearly in the white march expansion of PoE. The closer you get to that hut that is on fire in Stalwart the more the game stress your system. If I could turn those effects off, the entire area would run better. Also anywhere in PoE that has mist or fog or moving ambient environmental animations/effects taxes the system way more than an entire field full of enemies.

Actually, my current system is not having problems with running POE or even Wasteland 2. All the settings are in Normal mode (or medium), that is why I'm puzzled as to how I am experiencing poor performance in T:ToN.

I haven't tried the White March though.

I am currently playing PoE as well. I get mostly very good performance but I can notice the FR take some hits around environmental stuff like I mentioned earlier. This has not dipped FR to single digits but it is there and noticeable.

TToN on the other hand is barely playable for me and I am using a graphics card with 1 gb vram and I have 8 GB of RAM.

My specs:
Intel Core Duo @ 3ghz
Radeon 7400 series gpu w/1gb vram
8 GB ram
Windows 10
