Think of the Witcher series, where you have to play as Geralt but you can custimize his skills and armor,etc..
You take control of a body, so the character's look is already made so to speak. less custimization but also more of a personal crafted story imo.
To head off complaints:
1) This does not represent a cut: In fact, adding the option to select gender was a stretch goal during the campaign.
2) This is "by design", not a comprimise: PST had zero customization options, and the developers wanted to retain this to emphesize "You aren't playing your story, you are playing the story of the Last Castoff's story.
3) This isn't going to change.
So you can choose the gender of the main protagonist, but not its appereance? Is that correct?
1) in the beginning, you get to choose your gender
2) shortly after, you get to choose your class: Nano, Jack or Glaive (basically wizard, rogue, fighter)
3) and modify it a bit by assigning stat points and skills, and by choosing a descriptor (basically a package with some boni/mali to skills and/or stats, e.g. "observant")
4) In one of the first quests, you can choose between 3 foci (basically social, stealh and fight) which give an immediate bonus/ability and another 2 on level up
Other than that, every level (tier) you get some automatic abilities, and also to choose a new skill or ability, edge (makes skill/ability use easier/cheaper), 2 stat increases and increase the max points usable for checks.
Those are distributed over quarter-levels so you don't get a big jump from level 1 to level 2, but an incremental increase.
Oh, and there are tons of in-game modifiers you can find. Not just items, but permanent stat increases, abilities etc.
Thats correct. Your appearance is predetermined based on gender. Thats due to the plot. You do however get to choose what you become. Class, stats, skills and gear is your choice.
