I only suggest this because then you'll know the answer to your question once you play it.
I think this game will be great, but its not Planescape: Torment.. nothing will ever be I suspect.. Infact its so good, that I rather have an enhanced version of that than new games
Are you a german by any chance? I just looked up Planescape: Torment and saw that one of the devs was also responsibile for Das Schwarze Auge, which was the best rpg i ever played, even if this happened like 18 years ago. But the combat-system they had, you could even let the game calculate the fight with a cool animation, THAT is, what i was looking for.
D:OS got it all, best combat system and great story. This is a mixed bag but looks like a great story.
Pillars and Tyranny got great stories, but the cluster fight of real time with pause almost makes the games unplayable.
Check up on which is currently the cheapest, buy it and then next time buy the next one as cheap as you can.
If you have not played any of those there is no reason whatsoever to buy on release as long as there are a lot of excellent games waiting for you.
I can not give you a honest answer when it comes to TTON the beta content is really good, but that does not mean that its the same for the rest of the content *shrug*
Also, you're missing one: Shadowrun Dragonfall. Be sure to check that one out too.
If you are more action oriented and want to have fun in turn based combat, i'd go for Divinity Original Sin. One of the best RPG's i have ever played, 2nd only to Dragon Age Origins. Very innovative and responsive combat style makes you able to mix different elements together (ex if you use fireball on an ice surface you create water surface which in turn makes enemies far more vulnerable to lighting dmg etc). Very long game too and you can coop with a friend.
If you are into narrative and story driven content, go for Torment. Not much experience with this title personally. But it is more of a "reading" rpg than a "slashing" one if you know what i mean. Planscape Torment tho was a great game, and if it's gonna be anything like that it will be amazing too.
If i could recommend something other than these i'd go for Dragon Age Origins, Fallout 2, Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity or any of the good old RPG's with high rating on GGG, like Baldur's Gate (especially BG 2 for me), Neverwinter Nights etc.
IF you are looking for something that is fun and relaxing, kinda like Grim Dawn (awesome game!) you might want to look into Titan Quest, or my personal favourite Dungeon Siege 2, where you manage a party of 4, have access to tons of loot, including set items, you have 3 different difficulty levels on which you can replay the game and lots of hidden areas/secrets.
For a better Diablo 3 experience, go for Path of Exile obviously!
Hope it clears things up for ya! Cheers! :)
A lot of nice ideas you give me hear, thank you!
I am not German (I do understand and speak it abit) I did try Das Schwarze Auge and I liked that as well. Still not enough to topple my absolute top, but it was very enjoyable. The game is actually out in English as well.
Planescape torment, this, Baldur's gate, Baldur's Gate 2, Divinity original sin 1+2, and tyranny (pillars of eternity has some bland pointless story/rpg system
