I thought Tamine's own costume was used to bring in a fake crystal and paint was needed to smuggle the red one back out in its place. This was a bit contrived but they did explain that it was about "hiding in plain sight" as a hidden (red) crystal might be discovered if they searched people's cars.
Augie Tamine aimed to steal the red crystal and replace it with a fake to cover his escape. He worried their bags would be searched, so instead of bringing a red crystal, he brought blue paint and wore a convincing costume featuring blue crystals.
He also brought wire cutters to create a distraction: He cut the power to the projector, forcing the projectionist to leave their booth and replace the wire. During that time, he snuck in, painted the crystal blue and swapped it for one of his costume's blue teeth. Lastly, he tossed his paint & wire cutters into the back of Doug Baxter's car to cover his tracks on the way out.
By the time the projectionist restored power and returned to his booth, Tamine had covertly returned to his escape car, and the projectionist assumed the now-distorted picture was simply due to a malfunction he'd be responsible for fixing.
However, a complication emerged: As Tamine executed his plan, Jenny Chen was emboldened to ruin Baxter's costume as a loophole to win a bet between her and Mike Lendl. The vandalized helmet's heat lamp ignited Tamine's paint and then the rest of Baxter's car. This got the attention of Sarah Cunningham, the theater's owner, who in turn saw the distorted picture and immediately suspected foul play. In a panic, she rushed to block the exit with her van, crashing into another theatergoer.
Nonetheless, Tamine's costume was a convincing enough cover for the stolen crystal that he was ultimately able to leave undiscovered.
There is no light element in his lamp. So I decided that Tamine stole it too to exchange in the projector. Otherwise why would he throw a can of paint at Baxter's car and what's doing there wire-cutters ?
Tooth from Tamine costume is barely fit high-end projector.
For real he should have had fake red crystal to swap.
So far-fetched plot.
He needed to leave unnoticed.
If he hadn't cared, he wouldn't have put the replacement in the projector at all.
But he did illogical tooth replacement.
I think it's just to overcomplicate the scenario losing realism.
