I'm having the same problem. It's strangely inconsistent too, it got worse each time I started the game. Some time had passed and I'd shutdown/powered up my PC before each time I'd opened it, for whatever that's worth. The last time I played it, in which I finished the demo, it was really quite bad, it sounded like there was some kind of slowdown/lagging going on.

EDIT: when I run the game outside of steam (directly opening up the game.exe from windows) the audio is fine.

Had the same crackling audio bug and in another game (Dale and Dawnson...).
Do you have AMD hardware on your computer?
I used AMD Cleanup utility and after download and reinstall AMD Software the crackling audio bug seems solved.
