FIX THIS! Windows is a dumpster fire and we need to be able to use Linux with GTA.
Has nothing to do with valve , rockstar don't support it.
'Rockstar Games has stated that "Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online", effectively locking out Linux and Steam Deck users from playing GTA Online.'

But.... we know them :D

Again nothing to do with valve or steam , rockstar has disabled it and valve can't do nothing about it . The decision and solution to this problem lies with rockstar games devs

Edited the post. You're right about Rockstar entire responsability.

Rockstar Games has officially stated that Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online, confirming that Linux and SteamOS users are unable to access GTA Online multiplayer. This statement was published on their official support page on September 17, 2024, and remains unchanged as of February 2026.

The FAQ explicitly states:

"Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online. You will be able to play GTAV Story Mode but unable to play GTA Online."

This decision is not due to technical incompatibility, as BattlEye itself has native Linux support and has confirmed opt-in Proton/Steam Deck compatibility since 2021. According to BattlEye, developers only need to contact them to enable Linux support—no additional code changes are required.

Despite this, Rockstar has not enabled BattlEye for Linux, and multiple community reports, Reddit discussions, and petitions (including one dated November 2025) confirm that the issue lies with Rockstar’s choice to not opt in to BattlEye’s Linux support, even though it is technically feasible.

In summary:

Rockstar's official stance: No support for BattlEye on Linux/Steam Deck.
BattlEye’s capability: Fully supports Linux and Proton on an opt-in basis.
Root cause: Rockstar has chosen not to enable the feature, despite it being simple to do so.
Community response: Widespread criticism, with users calling it a deliberate exclusion of Linux gamers.
gonna up that post til death
You can get past the annoyance and into invite only sessions only linux, however do not expect to be able to play in public sessions. You can play with anyone that also blocks battleye dns

For real?
it doesn't work mate
It did for me, and so has it for others. You can try it and see if it works. I wrote a small guide about it and have included sources for further reading if you are interested: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3658540317
Simply navigate to your hosts file in your /etc/ directory and add the following addresses without the text in parentheses:

0.0.0.0 paradise-s1.battleye.com (for legacy)
0.0.0.0 test-s1.battleye.com (unknown)
0.0.0.0 paradiseenhanced-s1.battleye.com (enhanced)

Install the proton battleye runtime and set launch argument to point to it. If you are not kicked within 2-5 minutes you should be good.

A reddit post surrounding the discussion of getting around the anti cheat states "This fix alone is not enough for most systems, you must also disable split lock mitigation". I myself did not have to do anything but maybe your system requires it.

This will be a game changer for Linux users. Thank you
Thanks. For me playing this game is all about friends :steamsad:
Did this work without any necessary tinkering? A larger sample size of people is helpful information.

Let me know if it kicks you randomly as I have yet to experience this and protonDB reports are all over the place.

Also it is important to note that you will likely find it extremely difficult to get random windows users to add these addresses to their hosts file or download some third party software just to play. Tech illiteracy will become a large barrier until R* decides to tick on the native Linux support.
