Mission failed - Mission over?

In Hit 'em up, I was at the last stage of the mission and I killed everyone at the motel except the actual target. I go up to him and smack him with my gun and he dies, but then GTA tells me "Mission failed" with reason "Mission over". What have I done wrong?

Some of the jobs/heists give you really weird reasons for failing. I got the "The Default has Failed". So I was like, "Uuuuh... okay?"

Well, at least it implies that you have failed to do *something*. In this case, it just says the mission is over... because the mission is over.

On the "Lost MC RIP" you can get "Failed Mission - Mission Over" if you kill all the Lost in the cemetery before you trigger the "Goto the Cemetery" waypoint.

So it sounds like you run the risk of getting "Failed Mission - Mission Over" if you complete a later objective at the same time or before you finished the one before it on some missions.
