Another thing is make sure both of you are appearing online on the Social Club. To make sure you are appearing online on the Social Club do this: Once on GTA V push the HOME key to open the Social Club, then click the gear icon next to your account, then click Settings, then click Game Settings, then set it to Friends & Crew or Everyone.
Both of these solutions has fixed problems for my own friends who could not join me.
Another thing is the Bad Sport Pool. People in the Bad Sport Pool can only play with other people in the Bad Sport Pool. If one of you are in the Bad Sport Pool and the other is not then that would prevent you from being able to join eachother.
All my friends appear to be offline at all times. Maybe this has something to do with it?
He can send you invites because you are online. You cannot join because he is "offline". Messages are irrelevent because they can be sent to anyone at anytime regardless if they are online or offline.
