HOW TO ACHIEVE BETTER FPS WITH VSYNC ON: Activate Triple Buffering with a simple trick
To begin, let's explain for those who don't know about triple buffering what is it really. To summarize, it allows framerate to be more constant when using VSync, preventing for example your FPS to drop suddenly from 60 to 30. If you want a better explaination, I invite you to do a quick search on Google or see this link[www.tweakguides.com], which is enough detailed.

Now you will ask how you can use it in GTA V, because unfortunately this game has not at this time any built-in triple buffering we can simply activate... Most actually known tools that can activate triple buffering are not useful with GTA V, because its graphics API is DirectX 11 and it's a 64-bit game, and none of them are able to deal with that for this function to work (for example the NVidia control panel - and NVidia Inspector - can only activate triple buffering for OpenGL games, and even D3DOverrider is only effective with 32-bit applications).

But don't give up now, with a simple trick you'll only have to do once per game session, you will be able to activate triple buffering in GTA V (obviously VSync has to be activated ingame or in your graphics card control panel for this to work):

WHEN ACTUALLY PLAYING GTA V, DO A ALT-TAB TO SWITCH TO YOUR DESKTOP *

Then you can do another Alt-Tab or click the GTA V icon to return to your game, where triple buffering is now activated.

This little trick that I have discovered while playing Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (which suffers from the same limitation) can for sure be tested/used in another games.

To conclude I hope this will work for those who want to play with VSync without big FPS drops, enjoy being a badass in GTA V! :Pig:

* Alternatively you can do a Ctrl-Alt-Del, choose Cancel and return to game with one of the methods detailed above.

And deal with occasional screen tearing? No thanks.

If you play like me with a controller, it's not a big problem. But you can go to your graphics card control panel and set your "Maximum Pre-rendered Frames" to 1 to minimize input lag. ;)

I don't think it's triple buffering... DirectX using something called "Render Ahead"... but similar concept. You also don't have to ctrl+alt+del or alt+tab... you can just flick on an option in the graphic settings like MSAA and cancel when it asks you to accept. Anything that refreshes the screen like that will enable it.

You still have to do a screen refresh technique to use the render ahead buffer if you want better framerate when the vsync kicks on.

"Max Frames to Render Ahead" is the previous name of the "Maximum Pre-rendered Frames" I was talking above. Nothing to do with triple buffering. Haven't tested your method though, you might be right about "screen refresh".

I can't believe thats the way to enable it, thank you

You are correct, I noticed this myself a couple of days ago
