GTA Online DOES require port forwarding in some cases.

Additional Ports to Forward for GTA Online

GTA Online requires the following ports to be open:

TCP Ports: 80, 443
UDP Ports: 6672, 61455, 61457, 61456, and 61458

Simply type those numbers in and chose the corresponding type , TCP/UDP.

You don't need to open ports, as you don't have a server running in your network. Open ports ("port forwarding") are only needed to let external, initial packets through to a specified IP in your network. There is no necessity for this, unless you're running your own server.

That's a different problem, nothing to do with ports - if it was, it wouldn't run at all.
I had the same issue, everyone left after some time, I sometimes landed in empty sessions, after I port forwarded, the issue reduced a ton, I still get it sometimes though.

Sometimes you have to be the host in GTA O though, so its recommended to pfwd the ports I listed above.

I've been the host and have never had an issue having no forwarded ports. If ports were required to be forwarded for any reason, the issues would be consistent if ports weren't forwarded, which they aren't.

Still worth a shot as it may fix the problem as rockstar said on the posted link above.

As far as I can see this refers to Xbox and PS only - I pretty much don't know anything about consoles, but it looks like there's kind of a P2P mode where players bypass the server to connect directly? In that case at least one of them has to have ports forwarded. Or is that an alternative mode for GTA on PC as well?

So uhhh, what to type for trigger port and what for public port?
For the first time today, i managed to get into a full session, and the moment i logged in the connection has been lost.

Everything else works perfect, but GTA Online.
After reading a bit more into that article I'm pretty sure this only refers to PlayStation and XBox. I don't see why it would make any sense to forward Ports 80 (HTTP) and 443 (SSL/TLS). You mustn't block outgoing traffic here (which most SOHO-routers can't do anyway), but incoming...?

If you nevertheless want to give it a try (please remove the port forwarding immediately when you find it doesn't help - open ports are always a potential security risk, so don't have them unnecessarily open):

The document says

TCP Ports: 80, 443
UDP Ports: 6672, 61455, 61457, 61456, and 61458

Public and internal port should be the same, the target must be the IP address of your machine (if it's static - if you're using DHCP with dynamic IPs, I don't know, maybe your router has an option, internal DNS or MAC-list for that or something?).

Again: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see any use in that.

// EDIT:

A bit of history on that:

In the early days of online gaming (early to mid 90's) external public game servers pretty much didn't exist. So if you wanted to play over the internet, one of the players had to start a server (usually integrated into the game) and give his public IP address to all the others. So the game server was someone's rig at home - if you had a router with a firewall there, in order to make the server reachable from the outside, you had to forward one or several ports to it.

Nowadays all players usually connect to an external gameserver which handles everything, so there's no need to open/forward ports anymore. The ports on that server are open - the client will accept data transfers from there, if he initially asked for it, without the need to open/forward ports on the client's side.

However as said it seems consoles (and maybe even some PC games?) still implement those P2P ("Peer To Peer") modes somehow.
