The stores are marked on the map (basket icons) only for GTA Online. For GTA V story mode, you have to find them without using the map.

So is there a reason they don't show up on the map in single player... Seems a bit retarded to me.

Also why so few, there should be more especially around the city part of the map...

Maybe because you must rob all of them to get 100% completion on the game. It adds an extra challenge if you have to find by your own.
