i juat got to the assassination missions as franklin and, after doing the first one, lester and the in-game tips suggested i invest in certain companies over the internet and try to make a profit off our kills or whatever but the website seems to be glitched.

whenever i click the link to a company's stock, it takes me to a different company. for example, i tried to invest in debonaire cigarettes, because that's what lester suggested to do during the mission, and it sent me to goldcoast.

another thing that happened is when i finally found a company that was actually on an upward trend, i tried to buy 10 shares. the game took the money but when i was redirected to the portfolio page, it said it was empty and i had no shares.

is this intended? i feel like this game would intentionally try to ♥♥♥♥ the player over in a fake stock market so i wouldn't be surprised if it was. if not, anybody know how to fix it? i don't know if it matters but i did this all off franklin's phone and not an actual in-game computer.

after playing offline due to my internet being down, I am experiencing the same issue. when playing again in 'online' mode when my internet came back up, the market seems to have fixed itself.

what is this trickery? is there a reason for this / is this a known problem?

Unless I'm mistaken, LCN is offline stock exchange and unaffected by your ingame actions (I've read otherwise, but was unable to spot reliable connections). BAWSAQ, that is online, is one affected by Lester's missions.
As for glicthing, I recall few wrong redirects and failures to sell/buy stock, but it was fixed by loading, or, in one case, restarting game.

You are correct in saying that LCN is the offline market and I've read similar (conflicting) posts about it being affected by in-game actions.

However, the problem relates to playing the game when not connected to the internet and accessing the LCN market. Selecting ANY LCN listing will either re-direct you to BAWSAQ (and showing as down and I think these are the companies which are affected by missions) or a completely different company.

On further testing, it seems that this is an intended feature to annoy those who do not own a legit copy of the game rather than a bug / glitch. The story mode will still be playable but it will be EXTREMELY difficult or near impossible to get enough cash to buy the expensive properties and vehicles.

I just tried to play offline (or, actually, disconnect while playing; I can't even launch game while totally offline), BAWSAQ simply refused to open, as well as any other on-line only activities (snap-whatever-photo mode, for example). LCN seems to be working fine, I even managed to earn there. But it wouldn't surprise me should Rockstar play foul - why fix old problems when you can sell people in-game money for real money through micro-transactions? Gun lost upgrades and most of ammo? Pay 5 bucks to earn 1 million and restock. Car with expensive tuning disappeared? Pay 10 bucks for 3 million and buy new one.
But enough of my nerd rage. Sorry I can't help you with your problem.

No worries and I don't think it's a 'problem' that will ever be fixed. It just means that I'll have to delay Lester's missions for when I'm connected to the internet so I can make use of the market.

If it's related with online mode (I played on offline mode)... In Russia we have one thing. It's "РКН" (РосКомНадзор). This thing block prohibited material (like telegram and others resources) and thanks to this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I can't play on online mode (I can't connect to SC servers, but telegram is working :)) ), only with VPN (I have only 10 free gigabytes) and what i should to do? I bought this game and due to a troubles i can play only on offline mode and i must lost my money by bug (or not a bug?)? Very good.
