I am in the same boat as you. Lost about 50 hours of gameplay and caused me not to touch the game.

The same thing happened to me yesterday but I found a solution. On Windows (7 for me but this should work in any version) find the download folder:
Click Start -> run %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V

Right click on profiles and look for "restore previous version". From here follow the screen prompts to load an earlier version of the folder from before the date you lost the saves. I chose to copy the new folder to my desktop instead of overwriting the folder just so I could be sure I was choosing the correct saves. You can just overwrite the folder if you don't have any saves. This method should restore any single player game saves lost on PC.

I noticed mine got lost after i cleaned out my download folder. For some reason my save files were being referenced from my download folder so when I cleaned it out I deleted the actual save files. No idea why this was set like this and I don't think it is something I did so beware of this as it might be a steam thing or a GTA V thing.

How did any of you survive before... now? Were you just too young to be ineligible to even play games? This isn't some sort of new phenomenon. Rather, you are out of touch.

GTA 5 does not have Steam Cloud backup... so yeah... nothing out of the normal here. You should have backed up your save manually.

Steam Cloud is a Steam service. Not all games on Steam use Steam services. Cloud backup is not needed. You can easily copy your saves onto your own media of choice for backup. Would it be nice? Yes, it would. But you have to realize that Rockstar does not use Steam services. Merely on the store for sale.

This is just depressing. After playing every game I've bought that has recently been released.. and deciding they're all complete disappointments, I turn to this game, expecting no more than Rockstar's usual complete lack of logic in most aspects of anything they've done in the last 4-ish years. Was not expecting them to not utilize one of the most crucial services provided by a platform they're selling from. Can't wait for when the world burns c:
