Grass Setting
Dear all,
I've been watching comparsion video and I wonder if any of you know what is the differemce between Very high and Ultra grass setting?
It seems to me Ultra adds some additional shadows.
Cheers

Ultra does add a bit more density and shadows but the fps hit is too much to justify it for me. Very high is good enough.

Ultra Grass is a real FPS killer, it brings even my heavily OC'd 780Ti's to their knees in 1440p.. forcing me to use just Very High to get 60Fps with other settings maxed out (No MSAA, and Advanced settings like high resolution shadows set to off due to vram limit). It's a setting thought for 980's 3 Way SLI or Titan X's for now.. unless you enjoy having slight stutters and lower FPS than 60.

Seems to work fine on a single 980 for me. Probably not on fully maxed + 1440p though.

On Ultra? did you go to a forest yet? it's gonna murder your framerate 100%.

Thank you very much guys for a great explanation.
It seems very high and ultra is only a small difference.
Does very high give you 60fps even in forest? I haven't been there yet.

Not sure where a forest is, I drove around a decent amount and didn't drop below ~78 fps. Wasn't in the city but it wasn't a forest.

paleto forest is a killer, even with very high i can tell something isnt smooth like outside that area.

i prefer to sacrifice AA than postFX, that setting makes the game beautiful to me.

Around Mount Chilliad and the Sawmill part is dense

I drove all around Mount Chilliad, I dropped to 63 FPS at the lowest. Definitely not worth the fps loss but it's playable.

Edit: Apparently my GPU was using 3.4GB of vram. Way over the 2359 it says ingame.

Ultra grass becomes interactive, when you fall over on the grass you will see your body moving it where as that doesn't happen under Very High.
DZimmy Apr 24, 2015 @ 10:32am
@Lloyd Franklin: You mean it will stay bent? I thought you mean overall interaction (it moves when you touch it), which is still there with Very High.
In Paleto Forest Grass - Ultra - 30FPS
- Very High - 60FPS, playing on GTX970SC.

what are your settings for the shadows, AA and advanced tab?
i dont dip too much in paleto forest, but it certainly feels less smooth than the city
(i have the same card thats why i want to know)

Btw. do you also suffer coil whine?

first,

my rig i7 2600k 4.5ghz
32gb ram
gtx 970
win7

i started with your same settngs but i cant stand going lower than 60, it just doesnt feel smooth for me, so i changed shadows to just high, tesellation to high (i cant tell any difference), and the rest we have the same settings.
On advanced tab i got long shadows and streaming while flying on, i had extended scaling distance at 30% but ended lowering all the way cause i cant mantain 60fps all the time.

Still there is a noticeable diference between driving in the city at night (ultra smooth) and going to forest and vegetation areas in middle of the day. (even with high fps, something feels jerky)

no coil whine luckily, i put my fan on 75% and close afterburner altogheter, any kind of overlay seems to affect performance for me, maybe im being paranoid.

edit, i saw your res, im running 1080, so you are able to push shadows i guess.
