GTA V - Mouse and Keyboard unplayable
Anyone know a good setup for driving using mouse and keyboard ? I find steering with A and D keys near impossible as its so sensitive plus, add to that my natural inclination to steer with the mouse which in-car actually changes the view direction, and life is just one crash after another.

I did change to use mouse for steering which worked but then i hit missions where I have to aim the gun and how do i do that without using the mouse ?

I don't see anyone else complaining about this so I guess its my stupidity but if anyone can offer some tips it would be appreciated.

ps - i also found that mouse steering would lose sensitivity settings when exiting/restarting the game to a point where i had to mess with it for 15 mins each time to get it to a point where i could drive a car - anyone else have that problem ?

I am using a MIONIX NAOS 8200 mouse (up to 8200 dpi)
MSI GP60 gaming laptop - framerate seem pretty good
No problems other than this mouse /keyboard issue

thanks

Plug your keyboard and mouse into a USB 3.0 hub.

I have been using the best possible set up for gaming the last few years now for around 80% of my pc games. Works wonders on GTA5 too.

Best of both worlds combined really, true analog character movement coupled with the aiming precision of a mouse!

Quite simple setup really-

PS move navigation controller in left hand, and razer naga mmo mouse in right hand.

No keyboard needed due to 27 fully mappable buttons/keys between the 2 devices.
True analog movement for your character means you no longer have to use a walk/run/sprint modifier key like you do for EVERY keyboard/mouse game. You can now move your feet in games at varying rates of speed simply based on the angle of the analog stick (just like console gamers have been doing for years) BUT since you have a mouse in your right hand instead of a right side of a controller, you can achieve the levels of aiming precision we have grown used to on pc.

Literally best of both worlds. And ergonomic as all hell.

PS Navigation Stick :15 dollars
Razer Naga MMO Mouse :75 dollars
Staying ahead of the curve : Priceless

Thanks all and esp. sasahassin for the detailed reply.

Think I'll wander up to the local IT barn and look for either a cheap controller or a PS Nav Stick.

Shame the game does not seem to work well with mouse and keyboard but aside from that it looks pretty amazing so maybe worth spending a few dollars more (uh .. film title there by accident).

Buy a controller off ebay. I did cost me 9.99 GBP . Plugged it in and it self installed so no messing about.
To be honest you can get used to swapping quickly. Also just set the sensitivity down ingame as the controller is a bit hyper sensitive to say the least
I guess it's a question of getting used to it, I myself have no problems with it.
For precise steering without having to have it set to always on, you can hold down the left mouse button and steer, and if you want to look around/aim, just release it.

Also, without having it really tested, I assume it's the opposite if you set mouse steering to always on - if you want to look around, it's probable that you just hold down left mouse button and if you want to aim and shoot, just holding down the right mouse button should do the trick.

Please tell me you aren't actually using that 8200 dpi ._.

Sheep Storm, believe me you are not the only one that this is happening to! There are lots of people complaining that it's near impossible to drive well with keyboard & mouse! OMG! I crashed too. It's like driving on sheet ice! How we slip & slide! LOL :P

I was feeling silly too & wondering if there was some trick to it or some settings that improved this that i did not know of, when i found your post! It seems getting a controller is the only option.

Hi Apple,

I did stick with using A + D keys to steer and after just a bit of practice I found I got pretty decent at it. I now race regularly against a friend who uses a controller and its a pretty even match.

Here's what I do in case it helps you :

1. use 3rd person view
2. use A+D to steer W+S for accelerator/brake
3. use mouse to adjust view on the fly e.g. if I go around a hairpin bend I move left or right to keep the camera view behind the car. This was a bit tricky at first but after a little practice it feels quite natural.

Another tip that might help if you are finding the A + D keys swing the car too far left and right is to try and increase your frame rate. I have a decent PC so now average about 80 fps but was doing ok down at 30 fps. In case you don't know how to check framerate then there's plenty of info out there on how to do it but here's a link to a discussion that might help https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/353033-how-do-i-check-fps-on-gta-5/.

Once you are able to see the fps then you experiment with graphics setting in-game to see if you can improve it if needed.

Good Luck and Happy Driving :)
