"High" texture VRAM usage
I'm running on an i5-3570k with a 2GB 660ti @ 1080p using the latest Nvidia drivers. When I bump the textures from "Normal" to "High" my VRAM usage jumps 812 MB. The game locks up every time. There is no combination of graphics settings that will get my VRAM usage below the recommended 2047 MB with "High" textures on. I can turn every other setting to "Normal" or "Off" and all the sliders to 0% and my VRAM usage will still exceed 2GB (2096/2047 to be exact). This is baffling to me.

I've done some cursory googling to compare what people with similar cards are getting and I'm seeing that the same jump from "Normal" textures to "High" textures uses anywhere from 400 to 700 MB. I've seen videos of similar cards running the game fairly smoothly with "High" textures on.

THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART:

*****Can anyone corroborate claims that "High" texture VRAM usage is around 500 MB or at least not around 1000 MB?*****

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Edit: I understand the concept of reducing other graphics settings to lower VRAM usage and I also understand that I have the ability to run the game over the recommended VRAM "limit". What I'm really looking for is someone saying "When I change textures from 'Normal' to 'High' my VRAM usage jumps X MB."

If you put shadows on normal and lower population variety you should have enough vram for very high textures.

what does lower polpulation do? what does it even do?

thanks for responding but if you had read my post in full you would have seen that i can't get below 2047 MB VRAM no matter how many settings i set to "Normal", "Off" or 0% (in the case of sliders)

do you happen to know how much VRAM your card uses when you go from "Normal" to "High" textures?

Or you toggle the ignore limits option at the top of the 'graphics' page. That will allow you to play with High or very high textures. You could play with that.

Do you know what "population" means? It probably lowers the amount of people on screen and all the cars.

It lowers the population of people and maybe cars. So less on the screen. I have a 750ti and I am about 300MB over my 2GB. I still run the game fine. I would love to help but I have no idea what is what haha. But turn off MSAA. lower water quality and reflection, Tesselation off. MSAA reflection X2. I dont know this is what I hjave done

i've tried this and the game crashes every time. it will definitely allow me running over 2047 MB but i crash after about 2 minutes

That doesn't make any sense, you must be confused or it's a bug. Some settings eat a lot of vram like shadows and population variety, others don't affect vram usage.
Grunt Apr 21, 2015 @ 8:38am
Raquel said population variety. That's seperate from population amount and would reduce (or increase...) the number of distinct textures the game loads (thereby affecting VRAM too).

Edited: I see you cleared it up as I was writing.

Im just going to say there is no real difference between normal and high textures so i just set them to normal, but in terms of how much vram it uses with my card the r9 285 2Gb it goes up to 2050/2047, so i bump down some settings for the usage to go down. When i play the game my fps doesnt change at all really there may be a small difference but i havent noticed it. In the end i feel there is no real difference between high and normal so i put my textures to normal and boosted some other stuff like MSAA.

i agree. it doesn't make any sense at all. my guess is that is in fact a bug or a problem with my graphics card. i'm trying to corroborate this theory by asking people to respond with how much VRAM their card uses when going from "Normal" to "High" textures

What the hell are you talking about, normal textures look horrible, very high textures look great tho.

it goes up to 2050/2047 from what?

i think the difference in textures is noticeable. the game runs fine for me at normal textures as well with the other settings cranked up

The level of questions for things that are clearly self explanatory surrounding this game is crazy. I mean is this the first PC title people have come accross that is demanding? Are they new to PC hardware...I am so confused why this game raises so many questions.

You want to play the game maxed out at higher resolutions, you need to have a PC like the one listed in my profile. Rockstar, hopefully won't downgrade the engine simply for the fact people have false expectations about what they can do with their rig.

For me, the game plays and looks like a dream. I am so happy with the outcome, both visually and mechanically.
