Lags Underwater with Submarine (Lights on)
Hi which graphic setting is responsible for the lighting in gta v. iam playing the game fairly good on my hardware, the only low fps iam getting is when iam underwater with the submarine in first person and have the lights switched on...that way you can see all the water particles and the ground, while that iam expierincing low fps, when i turn the light off..iam back to my normal fps.

so which settings you recommend to tune down, that i have good fps everywhere?

I actually noticed this today, going through all the sub parts/ waste collecting. I lost on average about 20-25fps when under water at times. No idea what caused it, unlike you I was in third person the whole time though.

mh it must be a specific graphic setting, maybe someone knows which one it is

In the graphic settings you have something called reflections. Try turning that off if you have it set to on.

zero relation with that

I'ts not everywhere underwater, but some places do cause massive drops. Turning off lights helps so it's probably related to shader quality and/or shadows.

It's postfx I believe . Setting this higher improves the quality of godrays underwater which is pretty demanding . Other underwater effects might be in play Aswell . But turn down postfx to normal and check again .

How good of you to contribute.

Of course. Surely there must be a specific setting in the menu somewhere called "Submarine headlights" - Warning 25 fps performance hit if enabled'..

No, it's more likely going be a setting that affects many things or possibly even a setting that is "unrelated".

You see they all go together and each setting affects the other which is why you have to do some experimenting to get the best possible quality vs performance ratio.

OP asked for recommended settings to achieve an overall good fps.

The solution is to experiment with all the settings simply by turning one down or off one at a time while testing the results.

This problem was actually on the xbox 360 version too and it seems that R* never fixed it. It has nothing to do with individual PC's.

same here, except my gpu gets hot, no lag

same here. GTX 970. 60fps with no lights, at all times. As soon as I switch on the lights, it goes to 45, 30, now I found a spot where it drops even to 17fps....weird......this is not something that should happen, no matter what settings you use. It is not such a different situation from driving at night inside the forest with tall grass. It's a shame, because the lights are actually useful, and are very nice to see (aesthetically) :)

This has to do with two things primarily, Shadows (and the softness) and Grass.

You can get it either four ways.

Suggestion One
Turn Grass to High and see if that helps (it did with me).

Suggestion Two
Turn Grass to High, turn Shadows to Sharp (there's seriously no need for soft at the moment as it just looks the same and unless your standing still, you won't notice)

PostFX has some effect, unless your computer is not high end, keep this High or Very High (its only a few FPS added when it struggles).

Suggestion Three
Change Shadow Quality to High, Softness to Sharp and Grass to High.
This will improve underwater a lot - Keep PostFX Very High

Suggestion Four
Turn down Resolution, change Shadow Softness to Sharp.

My setup right now I get 60 FPS and sometimes it dips to 57/58 from 60 from just exploring, this is when I turn my Shadow Quality from Very High to High.

Having optimised my game over 5 hours or so and tweaking everything to get the best quality and best performance - this is the only way I have been able to do it.

There are a few "problem" areas I found still and I believe its due to the underwater algi and grass has been double pasted (ie theres two on the same same co-ordinate on the map) and that kills my FPS by 20 FPS.

I have avoided the areas by turning the lights off whilst passing them but everywhere else under water is fine - having a beastly set up I'm still suffering.

Just noticed this problem today. My FPS drops from 60 to 50, even 40 when I have the submarine lights turned on, I'm on a GTX 780 SLI.

solution: buy i7...that did it for me

I found a pretty (Retarded) good way to fix this issue, that is by increasing the framerate :P

First. Set grass quality to high. (Yes you have to give up a bit of foliage) Then go in game and go to a spot where your fps drops MAXIMUM, like if you get average 70 fps, it should go to to 25-30 fps.

Now the fun part, go to settings and turn post fx to "normal" (Don't worry, you can turn this back on after doing this bit.)

Next, check your fps, got a HUGE fps improvement?? (If not then I don't know what's wrong. You HAVE to have grass quality at high to make this work btw)

Next just turn post fx back to whatever it was before (I believe very high or ultra). See the huge difference? Thank me later, have fun exploring the deep waters with this "funky" boost. :steamhappy:

[Unfortunately this glitch has to be done every time you boot the game, until rockstar games fixes it]
