This. Director mode allows you to explore the 'full world' of GTA as your online character. If you wanna play solo and just go sightseeing as your online character this is where to do it. Director mode has a lot of things not present in online; animals, life in the ocean (taking a sub out to sea is quite exciting), lot's of special NPC's more detailed clutter and more warried NPC and traffic spawns. The world is much more vivid and alive than the much more sparse one of online.
Be warned tho if you decide to go swimming in director mode. I had forgotten all about sea life and almost crapped myself getting eaten by shark.
Hehe, I forgot about sharks too when I replayed the SP game, and not only did they surprise the crap outta me, I got an achievement for the experience. XD
