Someone care to explain how to "own" a car
This is a thing I really don't understand. If you steal or buy a car and mod it, how do you kind of "own" it that it will be inbounded if lost or spawned back to your house or whatever. Buying bullet proof tires and whatnot takes dollars and can't really go to missions with another than your own car cause there's a high chance you need to ditch it.

Is there a way to get more cars tagged as your own other than the defaults?

Locate Los Santos Customs in your map, then buy a license and full protection or whatever. Make sure you own a garage though. Hope this helps

Shoot a RPG at a car, then say 'owned'.

That's how to own a car.

I don't remember seeing such an option in single player.

Thanks for the clarification. While we are on the subject of cars, anyone know what the determining factor is in whether or not you can sell a car to Customs? I was told you had to steal a low-end car, park it in your garage, then take it to Customs, but I sold one right off the street, so figured I'd go back and do it again but it wouldn't let me.

Timer, maybe?

Timer yes.. I think 8 hours in 'gametime day'
And remember to 'lock' the setting for who can get into your car.. any random idiot, friends, crew, passenger seat only etc etc .. in the menu you get up when pressing M

Thanks for all the replies. Even the RPG joke was nearly alright-ish.

This clarified it. I didn't see insurance option at LS Customs, but only buyable plates, though that must be decorative thing only. I will check LS customs when I get back home.

Spawk: just to clarify. The carage I park it in is then the tracker point and if lost I can find the car again at that specific carage? In case I buy tracker from LS Customs it selects a random carage I own? Can I somehow get a list of cars in my carages and/or manage them?

Pigmachine: you must be talking about Online play now do you? Good thing you mentioned it though. When I go online after finishing single player, that sounds important thing to remember.

Single player don't bother with "owning" cars because you cant keep them unless you put in a agrage and leave them there.

Online Buy a hideout and park the car in yoru garage it will automatically get insurance and a tracker. Set the car to passengers/no one and your car will be safe. If it gets blown up by others they have to pay the recover costs. If you destroy it you have to pay. Pretty much like any normal real life insurance claim.

Oh okay so in single player there is no way to own cars other than the defaults cars, unless a car is put in a carage everytime you stop driving? Damn that's kinda stupid. Shame on you Rockstar :(

If you leave the car on the street somewhere and it has a tracker on it you will see a white car icon on you're map thats your car. The tracker only shows you where your car is on the map in the open world. It does not tell you which garage its in. To find a list of cars in your garages just call your mechanic and select the garage you want to look in, it will give you a list of the cars in that garage.

If your car is destroyed without insurance its gone forever, make sure you insure it. If it get destroyed with insurance you call mores mutual insurance on your phone and they will replace it. Your car will then show up on the map as a whit icon. If you are a long ways away from it you can call your mechanic to bring the car to you.

As far as which garage your car is in it will always be in the last garage you park it in. If you move it to another garage it will always be in that garage.

Thanks Potato Wizard, though I understand we are mixing up the conversation with single player and multiplayer. And now you are talking about multiplayer right? This system should also be in single player game and what I learned from other replies I think it is not.

The tracker part is true but stolen cars have to get insurance put on them at Los Santos Customs. Cars you buy come with trackes and insurance

Ahh so if I buy a ridiculously expensive luxury car in single player it is tracked and "owned" by me and won't be lost?

Also, and I'm surprised I haven't read anything about it on the forums here since I"m on daily, but there is a severe dupe car glitch that can be done in the garage. Ive done it once, duped another car for myself, and my friend has done it accidentally with some guy he was doing a heist with. Accidentally duped this guy a fully armored Kumara or whatever it's called.

Only problem is we don't really know how we did it.
