It just depends on the situation. If you walk up to an NPC with a gun, it's usually a negative greeting.

You press right on d-pad just like the ps versions.

I just got the game, and I want to interact with random NPC's on the street. When I press H or hold it down, it doesn't work. When I press or hold down F, it doesn't work. Help?

Just press E. Your character will comment to the nearest person he's looking at. You can also respond to people this way. Say someone bumps into you and swears at you. Press E and you'll snap back at them.

Also, while in a car, switch to your fists by pressing Tab or scrolling your mouse wheel until they're selected, then hold the right mouse button to give people the middle finger. This is basically your "road rage" button. Pointing your gun at drivers is also funny.

i'm pressing E and nothings happening. The middle finger works though, that's the first thing I did when I got the game

Your character won't always comment at every person, but it should work on most.

Oh. Well let me go around for about 30 minutes and see who I can talk to. So far i'm enjoying the game, just hate how I can't have graphics high :(

E should work. Have you gotten to play as Trevor yet?

UPDATE, got it working. For some reason while i'm doing missions, I cannot interact with people. Strange...

Yeah, that's likely it. When you're in "mission mode," some of the rules change. No safe houses, can't see personal vehicle location, no side quests, no quicksaving, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if it blocks NPC interaction too. Glad you sorted it!

Sometimes, it just don't work. I will approach whoever, but by the time they're like "oh hi" back at me, they already started to run away. There also is the matter of if a taxi is too close by, it's not going to happen either. The times I do get it to work, the random npc's start conversing more than a one-liner. There was a young woman I had Michael approach upon after running her down, then she starts telling a story about how she's eight months behind on rent, and her boyfriend's a total bum, since I asked her how everything was.

This used to be a thing in GTA San Andreas. You'd press D-pad left for a negative response and right for a positive one. In GTA 5 the same mechanic is present. On console it works the same way but on PC, looks like you only get one key which is "E" and its always a negative response. I could be wrong about latter. They really messed this up, I'm sure the large majority of players doen't even know this is possible. Such a pity. The more interactions you get, the more the city seems alive.
