Weird FPS drops outside the city
Hi Guys !

There is a weird problem for me.

My PC specs are :

i5 4690
GTX 980 Strix
16Gb RAM
Windows 8.1
1920*1080

GTA settings are : All max except MXAA desactivated and FXAA activated.

Everywhere in the city, i run it at 60fps without any drop (57fps to 59fps)

But at a certain point when i try to go out the city, framerate drops to 30fps/40fps, even under 30fps sometimes (26fps) is the lowest i'v seen.

So i go back to the city, and it automatically gets back to 60fps, like there was an invisible wall or something that makes it drop.

This is absolutely not random, systematic.

Do you, guys, have some clues to resolve this ?

Thanks a lot.

PS : sorry for my english, tried to do my best.

Thanks MilkZhake, i can notice that a lot of people have issues and mine is surely not the worst of all, but i just try to understand.

However, Thank you for the answer and i hope the best for you on this game.

I have not gotten out of the city yet but have had no issues so far. I would play around with my settings if I were you. Is'nt outside the city a wasteland? It could be the high res textures and shadows are using more RAM and causing some issues. For example. Just monkey around something may be causing the issues like unoptimized lighting outside the city. It would not be unheard of.

not trying to make you stupid but, did you disabled v-sync?
Javi Apr 14, 2015 @ 10:10am
try lowering the grass quality maybe?
markymarkie Apr 14, 2015 @ 10:17am
I experienced the same thing and found that it was v-sync causing the problem, despite grass quality being the obvious culprit (it wasn't).

Here are several steps that have improved the experience greatly for me:

1) I was unable to sustain 60fps, but 50fps is attainable for my rig so I opted for 50Hz refresh.
2) Enable v-sync but force triple buffering in Nvidia Control Panel.
3) Capped the frame rate at 50fps through MSI Afterburner. This evened out the frame pacing to a locked 20ms and eliminated the judder, something which v-sync didn't do on its own.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your comments guys

markymark unfortunately, it doesn't change anything.

I have a reaaly solid framerate in town (on foot or in a high speed car), but there is a point when i quit LS that makes it drop to 30fps (sometimes less).

Let's wait for Rockstar and a patch.

I'm glad to see that i'm not the only guy, that proves that me, my settings or my rig aren't the problem..

Hey man, googles my issue and found this discussion :D. Firstly, I just wanna say, most people, if not all, who replied to this post don't know what the OP means. He is saying, basically there is a road that leads out of LS (A high way road) and basically there is a sort of step where the Light grey coloured road becomes dark black. As soon as you go over the bump you drop to below 30 FPS, go back over it heading towards LS or reversing and looking at the way you want to go and your FPS goes back to your 60. I have the exact same issue, I believe it's because the area you're going into is a different location and instead of there being a loading screen to load the new area, it is loaded in the background procedurally and that I what's causing the drop.

I'm playing on a laptop, Lenovo Ideapad y50, with a GTX 860m 4GB (Maxwell), i7 4700HQ and 16GB DDR3L SDRAM. I OC'd the GPU since it runs at a max of 67 without OC and a max of 69 with +135 core and +500 Mem. I get 49+ FPS in the city and it drops to 29 outside. I run just the same as you OP, which is strange. I have every setting maxed out, apart from reflection MSAA and MSAA. I also disabled FXAA because it results in a loss of quality when enabled (some blurring on textures). I also have vsync off. I play in an externL BenQ XL2420Z monitor too and my refresh rate is set to 59 because I can't take advantage of the 144Hz in this game at the settings I play at. My FPS is never stuttering in GTA V though. It's pretty much always constant, even during a chain reaction explosion of police cars it stays the same, if not increases (which I don't understand the reason behind).

I found this issue on a cracked version of the game, in single player mode, however, so in the updates for the steam version there might be better optimisation and less glitches.

nice useless bump, well done !

If you are dropping below 30 FPS out in the country, you are going to need to lower your in game settings.

I'm running 60+ FPS in the city and my game drops down to 45+ FPS in the country, occasionally. There isn't much you can do about it, you can hope for a patch or just lower your settings.

I can jack my settings up higher and always maintain 60 FPS in the city, but when I get out to the country I'll have drops down in the 30s....

Don't feel bad, because even SLI Titan 980's can't maintain a constant 60 FPS out in the country.

Edit: Just to give an example of how vastly different the city and country is, I can turn on MSAA x2 and still get 60+ FPS in the city with no drops.. But, god help me when I go to the country.

Turn grass down, I just turn it completely off. I max everything else out and turn Post FX down to Very High and use MSAA 2x. I have a GTX 980.

I believe the map was made up of certain areas, which were compiled at the end. Allowing different teams to work on them at their own pace and compile them at the end, this means that there are areas, that when you pass a point, start being loaded in the background so that there are no loading screen bits like in other games. That's all, the only way to fix those kind of problems is by waiting them out, lowering graphical settings will help because less textures need to be fetched and such, but don't, stay with what you have and outlast the loading time with patience

Gunna be honest, sounds like you either have:

A) A corrupt game download

B) A virus

C) Drivers not updated

D) Corrupt Driver Download

E) Corrupt Microsoft Update Download

F) Antivirus or Firewall interfering

G) Maybe a computer part is starting to malfunction. Early signs of a part going bad.

H) When's the last time you've reinstalled your OS? Backing up your data and doing a fresh OS install can work miracles.

Just pointing out just because a majority of people believe something doesn't neccessarly mean it's true. It might be true, but having a large number of people saying the same thing DOESN'T mean it's true. People used to believe the earth was flat by majority consensus afterall.
