For the record, I was kidding.
I always found it odd they let us name our characters but never once did it mean anything in the Online mode. They just as easily could have excluded that feature but for some reason it's there. My thoughts have been that possibly they'll use it for the PC version.
The character names probably just exist to easily distinguish between multiplayer characters on the same account at a glance.
