'What' is asking for an update? Do you have storymode mods installed? Scripthookv?Remove them. Verify your game files. You could even delete gta5.exe before verifying so steam 'should' give you the correct version (still need mods removed though...).

Of course., this assume you have a single copy of the game installed, not multiples, looking at wrong folder and all that. Only mentioning because many have done this in the past.
