Did that. Did nothing for me.
Your controller may be bad then. Try with another controller. I use Xbox one wireless ones now, they seem to last a long time and run's off pc's bluetooth so no adapter (unless you don't have bluetooth).
No, my controller is good, it works perfectly with every other single game on steam and other platforms.
I found out what the problem is but I do not know how to correct it and Steam does not have any tutorials in which I can follow. The triggers must be mashed with incredible strength. This is the stupidest thing I have ever come across with controllers. I do not know how to make it where I can disable it because I am middle aged with arthritis and I have no time to deal with this ♥♥♥♥.
You can't,. to my knowledge, adjust trigger sensitivity. In steam controller settings you can adjust thumbstick deadzone, but again you should have steam controller settings forced off for GTA since it has native controller support and steam input tends to break controller support randomly in GTA.
If you hit the windows key and type in "Controller", "Set up game controller" should pop up and from that box you can click "properties" to test function of controller. If you pull the triggers a little, Z axis should move granularity to min/max.
If you have KB/M prompts that tend to pop up at times, flip your mouse over. GTA can use both kb/m & Controller input simultaneously.
Again, gta works natively with xbox controller's, official 360/One/S/X ones all work. 3rd party ones may/may not (most are at least playable but like the cheap no-name ones tend to be really bad). You don't have to do anything. Steam controller overlay "may" cause some issues which is why you should disable it.
How old is the controller? You said you're a middle aged guy, just go buy a replacement controller, if it's not the issue you'll have a known good one...but for me when using wired ones woudn't last as long as the wireless, just tension constantly on the wire, typically where it goes into the controller. It can be intermittent, esp. when first starting so just loading up another game to test may not be long enough.
All that said, assuming you have an updated controller firmware (or at least not a super old one or a moderately old S/X one), doesn't have anything grime/debris trapped in the triggers and proper drivers for PC, in game, trigger activation should occur when barely moving each trigger, say in a car your reverse lights come on when slightly pressed LT and/or gun aims but not shoots when pressing RT barely. If you're only getting activation by putting everything you got into the trigger, huge red flag something's wrong with controller...
