This should help
When you go to your portfolio, the rightmost value is your total profit or loss if you sell all of that stock at that time, and the middle number is your return on investment. Ideally, you want to aim for a ROI of around 15%, though if you are having trouble getting used to it, maybe aim for 8-10%. ROI is how much of your original investment you get back as proffit. So if you buy 1 million in stocks and sell out at 10%, you would get 1,100,000 back, or 100 grand more than you originally invested.
It takes a while for stocks on LCN to rise fall, since they are tied to game time, so you may want to repeatedly sleep to pass time quickly. Turnaround on a stock is usually around 5 days if you find a good one (everyone will have a stock that rises and falls fairly steadily on a 5 day cycle).
I would avoid the BAWSAQ index since it's tied to global online activity, and it's easier to screw up. Once you get comfortable, BAWSAQ can offer better ROI though over a few hours of real time.
