Are single player graphics better?
I know that some games downscale graphics when in multiplayer, but is GTA one of those games? To me it seems like single player graphics look quite a bit better than GTA online's.

They gut quite a bit from the world to get multiplayer to run decent while online. It's mostly a few less trees, no animals, less cops (unless someone nearby has a wanted level), no underwater flora/fish, less NPC air traffic, and less pedestrians. The textures are still at the same quality that you set them on for story mode. Overall if you're in an online session with few players it just feels a lot more empty than story mode.

Where?

I think the game definitely looks a bit more lively in the single player mode. But that is to be expected. Still looks pretty good online.

I'm talking about graphical effects. To me it looks like shadows render a little bit further away, textures are more crisp and character LOD is higher

False, animals are disabled in online, if you see one, its likely a hacker that spawned one.

I am sure that is possible. Hard to do an open world online mode with all the bells and whistles dialed up while not crashing the game or kicking people out.

One particular difference I noticed was movement. In story mode I can actually see hair and clothes reacting to the characters motion, not to mention the actual animation that goes into the characters during story mode.

I'd say scale back were noticeable but by all means excusable.

I'm pretty sure SP has some higher graphics, improved draw-distance among other things. Haven't touched the SP in a while though so i can't really confirm.

And no, there are no animals in MP.
