What kills my framerate?
Hi, my PC specs are the following:
2500k @4.5, G1 GTX980, 8GB Ram, SSD EVO, EVGA 1000 gold PSU, Phanteks Entoo Lux and lastly H100i to cool down the CPU.

My issues are with the framerate. While the CPU or GPU or both are not working overtime, i take nice chunks of diving from 60fps down to 50 or 40. Sometimes even 30.

It generally works OK, i have everything maxed BUT nvidias MSAA. Vsync is on and set to Adaptive. GPU's power is set to MAX.

Here are a couple of screenies to explain what i mean

Well, i get big frame drops underwater while having the submarine lights on, but it depends on how much corals/grass there is under you casting shadows. Grass is the most taxing thing in the game. If you have it on Ultra every piece of grass casts a shadow that's why it's so taxing underwater or in nature. Try lowering grass quality or shadow distance in advanced settings.

Yeah. Lower grass.
I play at 1440p and I have a i7-4790k and a GTX 980Ti. I put the grass to 'high' because it is a serious performance hog.
Get drops into the upper and lower 50s with grass on Ultra.

Lol...
You're wondering why you have low FPS like that ?
If you have everything maxed out, then thats the reason ... You just have one GTX 980, thats not enough to play this game maxed out.
Turn off the Advanced Graphic Settings ( mainly Extended Draw Distance and High Res Shadows, extended shadow distance costs not too much FPS - same goes for High Detail streaming while flying and long shadows. ), lower Grass Quality to Very High or High, set Soft Shadows to "Softer" ( Nvidia PCSS costs a lot of FPS, especially with using High Res Shadows ) and turn MSAA off or set it on 2x if you need Anti Aliasing. ( Keep in mind, GTA V using Deferred Anti Aliasing, it costs a lot more FPS and looks worse than using a higher resolution e.g. through DSR/Downsampling )

You should have a massive FPS boost now - with still beauty graphics.

So your graphics settings shoud look like this:
Basic Graphics Settings: -Ignore Suggested Limits: On -DirectX Version: DirectX 11 -Screen Type: Fullscreen -Resolution: <Your Native Resolution> -Refresh Rate: <Your highest possible Refresh Rate> -Output Monitor: <Your main-monitor> -FXAA: Off ( You can set it to "On" if you want, costs no FPS but looks too blurry in my eyes - But you have less aliasing, especially if you play in 1080p ) -MSAA: Off or 2x ( You will lose ~10-15 FPS if you set it to 2x compared to off ) -Nvidia TXAA: Off -Vsync: Off ( Set it to "On" if you use triple buffering - you can force it through your nvidia control panel. With Triple Buffering, you won't have any frame drops if you can't hold your Monitors Refresh Rate - So if your Monitor Refresh Rate is 60Hz and you can't hold 60 FPS, your FPS will drop and lock to 30, with triple buffering this isn't an issue anymore. And you still don't have this ugly tearing. But you will probably notice a bit more inputlag if you use triple buffering - But that shouldn't be an issue because you already play with Vsync ) -Population Density: 100% -Population Variety: 100% -Distance Scaling: 100% -Texture Quality: Very High -Shader Quality: Very High -Shadow Quality: Very High -Reflection Quality: Ultra -Reflection MSAA: Off ( You won't see a difference between Off and 8x. From Off to 8x, you'll lose ~6 FPS ) -Water Quality: Very High -Particles Quality: Very High -Grass Quality: High or Very High ( The only difference between High and Very High are the shadows of vegetation. With Grass Quality set to high, there's no shadows on grass. On Very High, you can see shadows on grass. On Ultra, there is a lot more grass rendered with more shadows on grass - Grass on Ultra is FPS Killer #1. Here a comparison between Very High and High: http://international.download.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/comparisons/grand-theft-auto-v/grand-theft-auto-v-grass-quality-interactive-comparison-5-very-high-vs-high.html http://international.download.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/comparisons/grand-theft-auto-v/grand-theft-auto-v-grass-quality-interactive-comparison-1-very-high-vs-high.html ) -Soft Shadows: Softer -PostFX: Very High or Ultra ( There's no difference at all between Very High and Ultra. However, Ultra costs more FPS than Very High. I'd recommend to set it to Very High - Here a comparison http://international.download.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/comparisons/grand-theft-auto-v/grand-theft-auto-v-post-fx-quality-interactive-comparison-1-ultra-vs-very-high.html http://international.download.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/comparisons/grand-theft-auto-v/grand-theft-auto-v-post-fx-quality-interactive-comparison-2-ultra-vs-very-high.html ) -Motion Blur Strength: Set it to your personal advantage -Ingame Depth of Field Effects: Off or On, your personal advantage ( Looks great if you turn DoF "On", but sometimes its a disadvantage, especially in Online Mode. ) -Anisotropic Filtering: x16 -Ambient Occlusion: High -Tesselation: Very High Advanced Graphics Settings: -Long Shadows: On -High Resolution Shadows: Off -High Detail Streaming while flying: On -Extended Distance Scaling: 30% -Extended Shadow Distance: 100%

Feel free to use higher settings if you have too much FPS ( like over 80-90 FPS ) for more eye candy :)
These are the best settings for you to have good fps. In my opinion.( ~60 FPS and higher )

Maybe the broken graphic driver of nvidia + dx 12 while running win 10
They cant handle Async Compute.

https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/3jfgs9/maxwell_does_support_async_compute_but_with_a/

I can remember it was same problem with introduction of tesselation feature ^^

lol They can't handle Async Compute because GTAV does not run in DX12. There are no DX12 games out as of yet. If Win10 supports DX12 that means it only supports it. A game has to be made in DX12 engine to use DX12 capabilities. XD

I see a lot of ppl thinking if they install Win10 every game is gonna automatically run in DX12 but it doesn't work like that at all. :)

btw runs great on i5 2500k(oc 4.2)+gtx980ti , 8gb ram on win 10
high grass settings caused crashes
lowerd them to normal solved the problem

Gta5 doesnt support official the new OS.
Maybe they will boost the performance of the game, through future patches.

It indicates that Nvidia has issue to create driver, which fully support the new Os and this can maybe also cause trouble in dx11 .

I have lower FPS aspirations but it's nice to see what settings actually drag things down.

Nope, both AMD and Nvidia now have great drivers for Win10 and game is running better in Win10, at least for me. :)

It's just the grass. It's very, VERY taxing on the GPU on Ultra. Even setting Grass to Very High gives a big performance boost.

The only "real" DX12 test right now is the Ashes of the Singularity benchmark. It's in this game's benchmark that ppl figured out Nvidia's Maxwell supposedly can't run Async Compute BUT i don't believe it has been proven. Either way it's the first benchmark of a game that's in the alpha stage of dev. so... We'll see what future testing shows us as it can still go either way. :)

Oh, that's the big deal with Ashes of Singularity.
