Just about had it with steam and this game
I've spent hours trying to figure out why I am having such an awful experience with Steam and GTA V. I waited weeks for this game to go on sale and purchased it the minute I saw that it was 40% off. This is my experience thus far. Any advice on what to do next would be very much appreciated...

Yesterday...
I started to download the game and seeing that it was 62 gigs, walked away. Came back an hour later and it was only 6% completed because Steam, for some reason, refused to complete a download without me having to restart it 10 times, completely shut down the program 4 times, and pray and sit and watch every last gig download.

Finally, it was down downloading. Launched the game, started the story mode and boom. Freeze and crash. Turn graphics down, try again. Boom, freeze and crash. Try again. Boom. Freeze and Crash. Do some reading on forums. Verify files which takes a very long time to scan 63 gigs. Finish verifying and reinstalling so I launch the game. Boom. Freezes and crashes but not as quickly. Re-verify files. Launch game. Lasts a little bit longer this time. Freezes and crashes. Re-verify files. Game seems to be working now.

Today...
Launch game. Playing. Loving it. Freezes and Crashes. Verify Files. Freezes and Crashes. Delete all game files and reattempt download. Exact same experience as the first time. Took me forever and had to baby sit it the entire time. Launch Game. Freezes and crashes. Verify Files. Freezes and Crashes.

3rd attempt at re-installation. Wont get passed the loading screen after selecting to play the story mode. Currently verifying files.

I'm running Windows 7 pro with service pack 1, an MSI gaming 5 MB, MSI gtx960 gmu, intel i7 4790k 4Ghz processor, 18 gigs ram, 2 TB harddrive space...

I'm about to swear steam off forever. This is not the first time I have had a horrible experience from downloading a game through them. In fact, Steam is currently 0 for 2 in my book...

Have you tried turning either Steam or your PC off and on again?

Aside from the constant start/stops downloading it being a potential issue in itself, you verfied cache after and it is correcting files each time? Or it is clean onwards - even since getting errors/crashes ingame?

Some others having similar orphaned files have turned down their settings.
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V\settings.xml
You could modify that by hand or outright rename/delete - let the game generate a new one.
Then try some more conservative video settings - like grass on normal etc. Some have had success changing the dx version for a couple hours/days and reverted back without issue.

You could also see what version of gpu drivers you have running, or have you updated them recently? Might be time to update or remove/clean install them.

And of course, possibility of a heat issue (which turning down options would help with).

It is correcting files each time. After the last install it had to reinstall 10 gigs. The game was just working and it crashed again so now I am running the verify again and I'm sure it will have multiple gigs of files to correct. The lowest it has been is 1.9 gigs. The crash always comes after displaying a message that it failed to retrieve files from a rlib directory.

Drivers are all up to date. Had to spend some time with Nvidia techs because the latest driver caused my who GPU to crash but turns out I just had to reattempt to update the driver and it fixed itself.

I'll try running the graphics at a lower setting. The MSI software isn't indicating any abnormal temperature spikes that would cause it to shut down but I can't rule that possibility out just yet.

I JUST WANT TO RUN OVER PEDESTRIANS AND SHOOT HOOKERS!!

Are your display drivers up to date?

kinnikunky Nov 26, 2015 @ 9:11pm
I'm no expert but it kinda sounds like your issue may be a faulty hard drive? Do you get many disk access failures if you watch your "task manager drive tab" while running the game? have you run diskcheck after all this crashing? Defragmented? Just a guess... This is supported by the file access errors and corrupt install issues.

as for heat issues, I get them myself on a pretty nice laptop, even on extra low settings. But for me that just means my computer instantly shuts off! No errors, just PEW dead. Then I have to run diskcheck for the rest of the day. My hard drive is getting really bad after years of use and abuse and could really use replacing... 🤔

lastly, judging by the error log you posted, it seems to indicate an error accessing your GPU. "Device lost" I'm guessing refers DirectX losing a connection with your GPU. This doesn't speak to the file access error it posted, so I'm not sure. Is your version of DirectX 10 and 11 up to date?

Comment #6 claims that they had problems getting it installed but GPU Nvidia drivers are now up to date.

This concerns me... leads me to believe that you have an issue with the GPU driver. If you ever have an issue with a GPU driver, you need to clean out the old files and registrys. You more than likely have leftovers that are causing conflicts with GTA5.

I would suggest a fresh installation of your GPU driver (use a cleaner program, like DDU, before installing driver).

I'd also recommend making sure the rest of your hardware drivers are up-to-date. Windows does this automatically by default and does not do a good job. Best practice is to disable automatic hardware driver updates and do them all manually by downloading the drivers individually from the respective hardware's manufacturer's websites.

Ech! I just looked up your a"ZLIB" issue and yeaaah, a lot of people are banging heads against it. It 'might' not be your issue in full but it seems likely. One group on reddit has gone so far as to write a program in Python to checksum all the current files so they can manually replace corrupt files themselves.. 😩 https://www.reddit.com/r/GTAVpc/comments/32k6ub/gta_v_failed_zlib_call_fix/

The easiest thing to test right away would be to delete only the dlls and Exe (minus the launcher) and have the launcher re-download them for you... Like this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6foGiaEdX8s

Good luck!

Hey guys, I appreciate all of your help and that you took the time to look into and help me with my issue. I'm currently going through the process of making sure that all of my drivers are up to date, just ran the DDU software and did a clean installation of the Nvidia drivers. Now to go down the list of components!

The code 255(ff) tends to lean towards a reinstall.
The localized zlib call is the first I've seen.
I have seen quite a few posts about people having problems with intermittent steam downloads needing babysitting and having nothing but trouble with them. Without any of their logs I can't for certain say you have the same issue. Not quite sure how to fix that though... short of maybe opening your computer up a bit more - disable firewall, change your download region etc.

Do you by chance have an antivirus/scanner running realtime on created files as well? Or doing anything else drive related while downloading? Of course, not discounting the drivescan mentioned above.

To be 100% honest, I'm not sure. I will be looking into this because I have a feeling that my ESET software may have something to do with that.

That is added to the list of things to attempt!

I've also been looking over the Rock Star Forums for any relevant information. I'm going to spend some time tonight working on this and I will keep you guys posted on what I find works.

I'm having the same problem, but this is not a problem with steam.

The error with the game is rockstar's fault, and has been occuring with both steam and non-steam copies. The only problem that happened with steam is that you had to babysit the download.

So far this is the only steam game that I have (out of the 68 that I own) where I have had any problem with running it, but once again its not really steam's fault.

So far the error does just appear to be that some files are corrupted, since every fix so far appears to be just verifying files and redownloading them.

I agree, it has to be something in the games programming. I went through and checked everything. I got home from turkey day with my parents around 7:00 pm and it is now 1:00 am and there has been absolutely no solution to this problem. No one has any idea how to fix it and even though its been going on for months, there has been no fix to it. Its really disappointing. I was so excited to have this game on my PC. I only have a PS3 otherwise and now I'm looking at returning it and getting my money back from Steam and not being able to play it at all. I waited so long for it to go on sale so I could justify spending the money on it.

Well, at least I know that all of my drivers are up to date! *He says joyfully while slowly dying on the inside.*
Dr-Diabetic413 Nov 27, 2015 @ 12:13am
If my last comment wasn't any indication, nothing has worked thus far. Any other ideas? I'm probably just going to request a refund from Steam =(
