No sound after startup :(
My GTA will play the "glass smashing" sound on startup, but after that, nothing. This happened a week ago, but I managed to fix it somehow. Now I can't. Happened right after a Windows update seemingly.. worked 10 mins ago.

These are all the things that I have already tried:
  • Deleting x3D files from system32 & sysWOW64
  • Reinstalling DirectX
  • Resetting Audio Settings (i think this fixed it last time)
  • Entirely restarting Steam
  • Restarting the computer
  • Check my Nvidia drivers are updated (idk just in case)
I know for a fact it's not my headset, because everything else works, and I hear the glass smashing. I'm not planning to reinstall the game, as I'm certain that's not the problem, and it would be a waste of time.

ETA: In the Sound Mixer, both the rockstar launcher & GTAV are unmuted. I can SEE the green sound bar moving up and down with the music, but can't hear anything.

Any help would be appreciated, as I tried all the solutions on google yet none have worked yet :(

I was having this problem as well. What fixes it for me is on the main menu, under settings, to scroll past the online chatting menu option. I don't have to change anything, as soon as I go to that tab the sound just pops in. It's worked a few times so far.

I have the exact same problem. I can't believe Rockstar breaks their games with their updates so often. I spent months with no sound in RDR2 because of one of their updates, and now LITERALLY THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM is happening in GTA V, and i have no doubt it will be several months before they fix it IF IT EVER GETS FIXED! I can't believe I keep buying their games..........

Also, I only play single player, so I can't use the above fix...the game is now useless to me.

Actually, I just tried again, and clicked on "voice chat", and it magically started working again, thank you for the fix

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
