One thing I can recommend is trying the GloriousEggroll version of Proton. It's a custom version and usually has better performance and less bugs. Usually when you have problems, switching between official proton and gloriouseggroll is a good way to troubleshoot. Here's a download link: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom
Additionally, you should check out https://www.protondb.com/ whenever you have a problem. It might help you find solutions to different problems.
Just ran into this on a brand new build running Debian 11. My 8 year old system ran the game just fine. Gonna try Vlodiz's GloriousEggroll suggestion. Please let us know if you managed to solve this one.
Nah. The problem there is that you're a useless idiot.
For serious people who happen upon this thread, uninstall all Steam Proton versions then run the game with Proton Experimental. Not sure why that was necessary but after that the launcher is installed and you can switch back to whatever Proton version works.
Cheers!
