You can do it in singleplayer, just be sure to have a clean folder before going in online.

If i download the game, then back it up to a 2nd hard drive, then mod one and use the other for online, will that work?

I´m not really sure but i wouldn´t risk getting banned.

YES and NO... The question is if the mod affects other people's game experience or changes the model in the server or online save files.... If you want to drive around in a Lamborgini instead of a Bullet, you are perfectly allowed to, as long as the appearance of a Lamborgini is only on your machine.... Also, there are not bans for anything you do to the game when playing in story mode by yourself.

We talk about "ONLINE" not StoryMode

Online , no mods permitted ,no exception !
Not even FOV , texture replacement or car replacement.
Doing so you as for a ban !

In Story mode Single player , you can do what ever you want , and you will not get banned .

A FOV change is a major tweek, but I have followed very closely what mods are and are not allowed through Rockstar's own posts on their Social Club forums... If it only affects your client and is purely cosmetic, or is a tool that only affects your client (like a speedometer mod), they don't ban... Only if it affects your game play in a way that it gives you an unfair edge (which FOV can arguably do), or if it affects someone else's online experience, or generally cheats, then it can get you banned.

The way this topic is usually put in the Social Club forums is along the lines of "I want to drive X and was wondering if I use a Mod to make Y look like X when I'm playing, if that will get me banned." and the Rockstar reply has always been, "As long as only you see the changes, it won't get you banned, but if everyone sees you driving around in X, that's a bannable offense."

And if you are wondering why I follow this closely, it's not because I mod... Quite the contrary.. I wish they'd patch the game so that MODs when online aren't possible at all... I hate cheaters and I don't use mods, and all my research on the topic is in my being clear on just what is and isn't worth reporting and to make sure I have the right information when Mod arguments break out online.

Oh, I've done my hatemail directed at Rockstar over the whole modder grief in this game and how little they actually seem to do about it.

it's very sad that you get banned, it's like if you get banned from every server in MINECRAFT for having a texture pack (ikr minecraft ref)

...
changing yft and ytd files will get you banned because youre altering the rpf files.
it dosent matter if its only client side.
you also need scripthook, scripthook dot net and lua to use things like a speedo and speedlimiter.
which means you will also get banned.

(i dont know where he's getting his information from..)
(old thread but hey,, unless he posts authentic rockstar statements on modding yft & ytd files, And being allowed to use scrpthook/lua for speedo's only,, im gonna go with the standard norm and say no mods online.)
