Not actually true.
They just do not host the server process or the main network traffic
They do host the character databases, the match maker, a lot of other comms etc etc.
They are not host free exactly.
P2P makes cheating a lot easier since it is your PC motoring you, as you can then block the AC reports.
So this game being on dedicated servers will help reduce cheating a lot. There will still be cheating, just not as bad, and not as easy to cheat.
I can make it so you can not cheat in a P2P game, and blocking, tinkering the AC results in an instant punt.
It is done elsewhere to good effect.
You just have to actually want to do it, as a Dev.
R* has shown 0 interest though.
And yea, dedicated host model games do cost a Lot more to operate.
All things go to the host and all things come from the host.
The cost of bandwidth goes up astronomically, and said hosts need high speed connections
and hosts have to be propagated across various geographic regions to ensure all players have an opportunity to have a low latency connection, at least up to the point that the latency is on the player's side.
And the host itself is no trivial thing to create, which is really a whole bunch of individual things working together at very high speeds.
No idea if R* even has any dev experience in that area?
P2P has vulnerabilities games with dedicated servers don't have.
It is impossible to stop cheating in any game, let alone a p2p game.
Every measure you might mention to stop cheating, can be bypassed.
No game has 100% blocked cheating and likely never will.
P2P alone, makes the game that much harder to stop cheating.
Guess its different for me, but i wouldn't accept the same "thing" on the next title.
If they wouldn't learn, people have to make them change!
