Lost game progress

I'm trying to figure out what happened to my game save. I stopped playing this summer after the servers were screwed up and I couldn't log in to the social club. So this weekend I installed the game on my htpc for some nice couch action and the game had me starting from the beginning and I had no save data. So I tried on my office rig and had the same problem. I haven't reinstalled my os or uninstalled the game either. I'm at a loss as to what could have happened.

Single player saves are local, only online play is saved to 'the cloud'.

Save games will be stored on the PC you were playing the game last, in Documents > Rockstar Games > GTA V

I checked there, it's all cryptic. I haven't changed anything since the last time I played it. Not sure what happened but it happened.

When you say cryptic do you mean a folder name of just numbers inside in Rockstar Games > GTA V > Profiles? If so then you just need to copy that folder across to the same directory on your other PC and you should get the saves appear in game.

I've done that but what I'm saying is my game saves are gone from both computers. So with nothing being changed on my systems, my game saves are gone.

I think you're not fully understanding. Go to the directory that Joey Joe-Joe Jr. Shabadoo mentioned ON the original machine that you had the game saves working. In the profiles folder there is a sub folder with a bunch of seemingly rancom letters and/or numbers as the name. Go into there, and find the SGTA files, those are your saves. Copy them onto a USB Flash Drive, and put them into the same directory on your OTHER machines.

Not sure why this is getting confused, I have done what you both are saying my game save on the original machine has vanished as well. So neither computer has my original game save.

I'll check again when I get home just to make sure I'm not losing my mind and just slow. But I've been gaming a long time and have delt with this before. For some weird reason Rockstar Games and GFWL are the only ones I ever have save issues with. Had it with gta iv, and la noire.

Oh okay, that's what you meant. Have you reinstalled the OS of the machine with your game save on it? If so, as mentioned before, it's gone forever. How is it possible that it disappeared without you doing that?

That's the issue, nothing has changed in either machine same os install from when the game was installed. The only thing that was different was when the servers for the social club are down this summer. I also updated my email. Those are the only two things and if they tie game saves to emails, God help us!

Some people seem to get this out of the blue, playing it fine one minute, restart PC or whatever and next day the saves are gone and they are stuck having to play the prologue again.

It could be down to permissions of your user account maybe, or an incredibly sensitive AV app?

Yeah, I'll try looking into it some more but Google didn't turn up much. Not sure what happened to be honest, completely random and very frustrating.
