One way or the other: there's no (legid) way you can play GTA without a R* account. Neither in the past nor now.
And you always had to login at some point.
The only thing they changed during the last years was the original Rock Star social club to rockstar games launcher
Maybe you mixed that up.

BTW: R* games launcher isn't a third party app, but steam is (OR EPIC) ;-)

Seems like a modder trying to skip the launcher so his mod will work again. He seems passive agressive, besides very stubborn, and all modders are. Theres no other reason being this angry about a launcher. :steamhappy:

Steam version used a non-intrusive social club application from 2015 to late 2019 - many consider that 'the launcher'. It was required, game wouldn't work without it. It is what you signed into the first time you played, and input your credentials. It is what asked about cloudsync. It was certainly there (if it wasn't - I don't know 'why' I typed 'socialclubsetup' so many times back in 2016, etc). They still install/use this alongside the launcher.

But again, not intrusive - to the point that if you signed in / linked your steam even once - you didn't need to do it again*. It just would sign you in automatically. You could even get on the website, and change your email and password... and steam, would still sign you in. You could sign into steam on a completely clean computer - and it would automatically log you into social club. This is important for later.

*(of course, connectivity issues threw funny issues but I digress-.-).

Then, R* launcher came out - and a new window appeared, and the launcher had annoyances. Had they kept it named 'social club' launcher or something, heck, even kept it in a singular folder -.-;; - there'd be much less footing in the complaint against it since they are allowed to update their software.

Earlier this year - steam/R* stopped signing you in automatically. Now requiring you to properly input your credentials at least once on 'that pc' you are attempting to use. Now, steam isn't automatically logging people in - and many are finding out they actually lost their social club accounts years ago - or the emails went inactive, etc. The steam/R* auto login was the only thing keeping them in the game.
This sounds plausible, if it was a one-off thing and then worked from there on, I wouldn't remember that. Haven't played in years, and when trying to yesterday, I was met with the rockstar games cancer club whatever, I was able to sign in (after resetting my pw and doing 999 captchas for 45 minutes...) But then it didn't work anyway, as it asked for a product key, and when entering my cd key from steam, it says it's already in use.

Wrong and wrong, rgsc is definitely a third party drm. I've explained it countless times in this thread, I have the game directly from steam, and I'd you think I'm a modder (I assume you mean cheater..?) Then take a look at my account and reconsider.

Utterly deranged take. Rgsc was always an intrusive, annoying, malware-line 3rd party client, so there was always reason to hate this unnecessary bs, but even more so after yesterday, when I found that I can no longer play my purchased game ever again.

No, you are wrong
RSGC is a 1st party DRM
Rockstar made GTA V, RSGC is from Rockstar who made GTA V
And RSGC comes with GTA-V no matter where you purchase it from.
It was always a part of GTA-V, it has changed a bit over time but it has always been there.

Steam is the 3rd party here, steam is just the reseller, as they are on a number of other titles.

As for the rest, i would contact rockstar support, as it sounds like you maybe have 2 rockstar accounts and dont realise it, and have signed into the wrong one and the CD key is bound to the other one, unless your key was somehow stolen and like resold or something, in which case you still need to contact Rockstar support.

Nonsense.
RSC or RGS are native apps developed directly by Rockstar themselves and have been part of any R* game since GTA4, which was released in 2008.

So how could it be a 3rd party app if it's a R* app?
Apparently you don't even know what a 3rd party app is.

Nope, steam is platform of choice, steam is 1sr drm, anything beyond steam client + product is 3rd party

It would've been if I bought gtav on rockstar website or something along those lines, not when I got it from steam directly. Same reason why origin, uplay is 3rd party sw

You can buy and play GTA V without even touching steam or EGS.
But you can't without RGS. So do the maths 😉

And steam is nothing different than uplay, origin. GOG, EpicGamesStores or whatever shop you take.
Steam is also a game store only, nothing else

Hehe 🤣 Haha 😄
It'd be nice to even be able to play the game at all. A launcher is fine and all if it actually works. All I get is that I'm not signed in when in fact I am signed in :/
I'm with you OP on how to avoid non-working launchers when you buy a game.
