Then - there are launch options to force story or single, as well as the ingame landing page (settings, saving and startup) stuff to determine how you log in/where you go. I haven't tested if they clash/what takes precedence if the landing it set to 'online' and you pick 'story' at startup. Nuking the my docs / rockstar games / gtav folder or settings files in there would also undo/affect that. Onedrive itself could also mucking this up as well. If you use that - I'd at bare minimum set it to not bother with the R* games folder.
And of course... R*/social club launcher itself - has been wonky on/off since its creation.
I don't know how external drive would affect this in a sense of always causing you to start in multiplayer - if anything, it should be slow/laggy/problematic and cause problems logging in at all, or keeping you stuck in storymode. Imo anyway.
edit - though a non-default my docs to external/another location could possibly cause some issue there's '2' locations and its bouncing around.
Thank you dude, setting launch to -scOfflineOnly finally opened it in story mode. I hope that solves the issue permanently. If not, you've given me plenty of troubleshooting options. Thank you again.
And, eventually it will complain you aren't authorized to play - due to the intermittent drm, you'll have to pull it and sign in 'properly' again.
For giggles I did mess around with landing page 'off' and force into online -- then choosing storymode from steam - it undid the landing page info, went to main menu. Though, it could be an issue of the launcher, or my ghub/etc preventing something from properly saving (though my graphic settings save fine). Could be an issue in general - as over the weekend people were unable to log in but one of the reported workaround was to force landing page on / go into online and.. that worked (but could alos be picking online from steam prompt - or R*/egs versions -- or it didn't work at all and coincidentally.. logged in - access was 'random').
Also tried it from the R* launcher without the steam 'choose' prompt - did same thing.
Others will have to chime in if they can get the settings to save/stick, onedrive use, not -read only - files, setting landing off - go online - but using 'storymode' from steam prompt. Can only test so much on my end.
edit -after going into story or online, and setting landing off and picking 'my choice' it appears to have saved properly. I have also set steam to 'just launch' gta5, and not let me choose story mode or online. Seems multiple places to 'pick' - going forward, I'm going to have steam just 'launch it' and chose from landing page section (not that it matters I personally always load to menu/story first for anything else).
Definitely some things to tinker with if you don't want to deal with -scofflineonly shenangians.
A little more info:
-I still get the popup for singleplayer vs. multiplayer
-In the game's settings I told Steam to automatically load singleplayer on startup, and it still went to multiplayer.
-I don't use Onedrive.
-Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V + Program Files/Rockstar Games/Social Club + Program Files (x86)/Rockstar Games/Social Club -- all on my PC, not the external drive.
-Problem started with restart.
