how to use cell phone in gta5?

Up on arrow pad, or middle mouse is usefull if you're in a hurry. From there you can use the arrow keys to navigate through it, or the scroll wheel and left click to select.

I might have clicked something to put the phone to sleep but im having trouble bringing it out since i dont have a clue on what i pressed.

In single player, there's a sleep mode in your in-game phone's settings menu.
