banned online for playing with tank?

i found a cool tank randomly sitting in the game and i went around town shooting everything and some guy named kissxiaoyi sent me a message and said ive been banned from GTA online permanently and i started to get blown up forever.
am i not supposed to play like that?
i thought you just get infamous marking and get a price on my head .

no, i got a in-game text on my phone and i couldnt reply to him. his username was kissxiaoyin or something like that.
i guess it was a hacker trying to scare me?

just confirmed im able to go online after restarting game
is there a downside to causing chaos in the game and killing everything?

Yes, playing in Public Lobby sessions is consent to playing with players like that.

It's the reason why most players play in Invite Only sessions so only players you personally invite to your lobby can play with you.

It's in the Online tab in the Options menu.

Alternatively, you can also search in the internet for groups of friendly and like minded players to avoid playing with hackers and modders. Check the GTA forums for such recruitment forum threads.

sounds like that was probably his tank that he set out as bait.. and you were the fish he caught.. that actually doesn't sound as bad as some of the other stuff I've experienced.. like being invited and auto-accepted into a modder's apartment to immediately find myself in a cage.. or there's the insecure menu kid that can't handle the truth bombs being delivered, so they'll crash your game all together.

If the modder were smart, instead of blowing you up, he would have just crashed your game 30 seconds after sending the ban text.. I know that'd make me sweat till I logged back in with no issues and felt relief like that Robert Downey Jr meme..
