GTA 5 DOES NOT run on Steamdeck!!!!
I just bought GTA V on Steam to play on my steamdeck because, according to the specs, "GTA 5 runs well on default settings". Well let me tell you THATS CRAP!! i just tried playing the prologue mission and EVERY TIME the deck froze mid way through and i had to restart. i did this FIVE times before giving up!!! i'm bloody FOAMNG!!! Saying the game plays well when it clearly doesn't is false advertising!!
if i'd known of the issues before buying i wouldn't have bothered!!!
DON'T believe the information on Steam re GTA 5 it's purely there to get you to buy the game when it DOESN'T work on the Steamdeck!!

It does work, I played it on it on a friends device. Verify game files or reinstall it. Alternatively download a save file to skip the prologue.

nope it doesn't regardless of what you say. i've now spent over 2 hours playing the same damn prologue mission countless times. i've verified the files and tried it via both the internal SSD and micro sd card and each time the game crashes before the prologue mission ends. To make matters worse you can't even save the game during the prologue.
Guess i'll go back to playing on console - at least on consoles the damn game works without issues!!
Trying to play non verified games on steamdeck reminds me why i gave up on PC gaming in the first place!!!

Have you tried switching Proton versions? Tried Proton GE? Tried setting some launch options?

Seems like you've spent more time being fuming mad instead of seeking solutions.

The Thing is the info on Steam said it runs well with default settings - yet this clearly isn't true!! I've tried changing the proton launcher to experimental and the latest stable version and it still locks up. I've reset the launch resolution and even dropped the graphics settings etc to see if that helps performance and no joy. I've played through the first bit of the prologue so many times tonight it's ridiculous!! The furthest it got before crashing was when the car crashes after being hit by the train.

I'd hoped GTA V would run fine so I could play it on the go as it were as I already have it for PS4,PS5 and Xbox 1 but so far no joy. As I said if I'd known it wouldn't run on Steam Deck I wouldn't have bought it as I don't have a PC capable of running it.
Ahh well I suppose its a lesson learned if nothing else - only buy fully steamdeck verified games from the Steam storefront in future 😳😞

Have you tried Proton GE? What about older versions of Proton itself? Understand that the Mercinaries update did break the game in some regards so if they haven't fixed it since, I'm not sure how to help with this. Clearly the game does work at launch so something they did to the game itself, broke it for the Steam Deck. I saw on ProtonDB that several people were complaining that it all stopped working properly after the San Andreas: Mercenaries update dropped. Just more proof of Rockstar's utter laziness. Even Windows users have been having problems so it's not you or your Steam Deck.

I would test it on PC as I'm a Linux gamer as well, but I can't be bothered. I've abandoned Rockstar for the foreseeable future unless they change their ways. I just stay on the board to keep current on what's going on, what people think, try to help out, etc.

Rockstar sucks big time in our present day, I know. They've become lazy, careless, disrespectful and disloyal to their customers and community.

Maybe it's time to boycott completely. Join the Boycott Rockstar team. Don't you think it's time they were taught lessons after all the money grubbing and laziness? Maybe it's time to step back and take a look at the bigger picture to see just how scummy Rockstar really is and whether you should continue supporting them by playing their games.

The fact is when grand theft auto 6 releases it will break all selling records again, it has been 10 years since the last GTA and people will buy it regardless in what state the game is going to be. No boycott or activist will stop this even if they glue their hands to rockstar headquarters in New York city.

I see what you did there. I'm done.

Borg (great name btw) thank you so much for your reply and for trying to help out- massively appreciated! 👍🏻. I used to be a full on PC gamer from the early 90s until about 18 years ago but now I'm out of the loop with current PC gaming.

I didn't know about the Mercenaries update screwing up GTA 5 (though knowing R* it doesn't surprise me in the least) I'm glad it's not just me or my new Steam Deck that's the issue - in general my experience with the SD has been very positive so far. The only other AAA game that I've had freeze on me regularly is Batman Arkham Knight (and I know that had serious performance issues on PC at launch anyway)
I also have the full GTA 4 collection on PC and that runs very smoothly on the deck so it really must be just GTA 5 - maybe a future update will sort out the SD performance issues?
Again thank you for attempting to help out 👍🏻

I also can run GTA4 just fine. It's absolutely beyond any doubt, a problem with GTA5 that Rockstar created. Sorry I couldn't be of much more help beyond what I shared. Hopefully a future update fixes it, but with the state and reliability of Rockstart to get on top of things promptly, I suspect a fix is a ways off.

IMHO, you're better off to move on. There's way too many great games out there to have fun with. I used to have a deep love for GTA games, but as of the later years with Rockstar's antics and laziness, My love is pretty well gone for the future of GTA. I still adore the older versions and always will, but the future of GTA IMO, looks bleak.

If you have problems with other games any other time, hit me up. I try to help another Linux gamer if I can.

Yes but, as I clearly stated in my original post, the storefront for GTA V states that "GTA 5 runs well on Steamdeck with the default settings" - which it absolutely DOESN'T- and I know Steamdeck uses a Linux based system but if they state it runs well then it should at least run!!

there is a difference between requirements and a suggestion.

Don't bother paying too much attention to that person. They have been following me around badgering me for days now claiming to be an IT professional and blah blah blah. They figure they know everything. Notice they contributed absolutely nothing helpful, but took the time to tell you, "the requirements of gtav are for windows pc's."? Tell us something we didn't know! Yeah, this is what I've had to deal with, for several days now from discussion to discussion.
