Why does gta v take up so much space?
I'm not complaining but games like /just cause 3 is significantly larger takes up a fraction of the space. Is there a reason? If gta uses that space efficiently then how does just cause 3 have so much more land and still achieve 40 gigs with high quality textures.

the detail of the city and such

It's not the size of the map that makes a game take up hard drive space. It's mostly the amount and quality of audio (dialogue, music...) and textures, both of which GTA5 has in much higher quantity.

It's always the amount of cutscenes and such as well as audio. Skyrim is only 6 gigabytes, yet doesn't have any cutscenes and reuses a lot of dialogue

GTA V has a large soundtrack for the radio, very many HQ textures, and even TV shows. JC3 has a larger map but it reuses many objects and textures (trees).

Game has been out for three years also and has had over 30gb of extra content put into it. It's a hugeeeee game! And the attention to details is like nothing I've ever seen

It ranges from the big things like unique buildings to the smallest of details, like how flip-flops actually make a flopping sound against your feet. The absurd amount of detail in this game is what takes up so much space. Seriously, there isn't very many re-used assets when there doesn't have to be.

Audio files also take up a lot of the space as well, and from what I can tell, differnt shoe types have different sounds to them. Some shoes squeak, some shoes clip-clop. There's a lot of different engine sounds to the vehicles, and there's even that metal crinkling noise when a vehicle is shut off.

Also, first person and third person both have different viewmodels too, from what I remember hearing, so that doubles the amount of space the guns take up in terms of models.

Skyrim is pretty small because Bethesda specialise in using modular environment sets. That is, they reuse the same assets and textures a lot, and they do it very well which is why you don't notice it so much. All the caves are basically using the same sets of assets, as are towns and villages. It's like this throughout the game.

Just Cause does have a larger map, but there's less in that map. I believe there are also fewer vehicles, and as with Skyrim, many locations reuse assets.

GTA has a lot more unique locations. Most of the buildings are unique, and the map has a lot of stuff going on. There are still modular assets used trough out the game, but far less than JC and Skyrim. Then there's cut scenes, a whole lot of audio, animations etc. It adds up.
