So if playing story:
No apartments
No dlc cars
No dlc business, heist, car meet content
No custom characters
...but what you get it is:
Random events in the world
Drive a taxi and pick up fares - must steal a taxi to get this
The stock market
Triathlon
Car wash
Dating, sort of - Michael can go on dates with his wife, and all characters can drive a stripper home for intimate relations (not shown). The dating aspect is pretty limited and imo, was better in GTAs' 3 and 4.
There's more of course and that's the advantage of SP vs Online.
So to me, it's always been a fight between wanting what I get in online vs wanting what I could have in story. Had the invite-only or solo session offered all of the things from story mode, I'd be a great deal less conflicted about it.
fixed
I was honestly baffled as to why there was no functioning Casino in SP or barely anything else, outside of story mode, until online launched with micro-transactions.
So most people probably bought it for this when it got released in 2013.
the only reason why I started playing online was because there was no new DLC for the main game any more.
but after I saw what happened to the game, I definitely won't support GTA6 ONLINE but stick with the single player game.
back to the roots for me.
In my own case, I couldn't care less about the actual story; my interest lies in the sandbox options that story mode gets. My reasons why story mode has never stuck with me are these:
No dlc cars
No apartments
No custom characters
Forced music in houses
Forced personal vehicles
Forced non-personal vehicles disappearing
Everything else about story is awesome to me
If story mode had had these listed things and removed the forced stuff, I'd play it way more often.
Vice versa for invite-only session options in Online. I'd play Online way more often if the invite-only session had the sandbox options that story has in it. As is, I'm simply conflicted.
Don't get me wrong. Rockstar makes decent stories; I've just never been interested in playing through them.

back in SA u could rampage against cops for a long time, never die, even at 6 stars the national guard came after u with tanks.. cheesy blocky tanks with a side door like on a house lol. an the ai was just way st00pid-er.
since the gov't 'talked' to them, 4 an now 5 u cant win out for very long against cops. trying to teach u not be bad boys n girls I guess, but more n more mofos b trying real life GTA sh*t..
Same for III and IV. Even when triggered, I usually just run till the star disappears. I did do a battle on one occasion in GTA V to see how crazy 5 stars were, but for the most part I just enjoy the sandbox.
As to the politics, it's to be expected with a GTA game.
drop a trainer in V and set god mode, god vehicle, unlim ammo, all weapons, spawn some hooker bodyguards, an lay waste as long as u want..
ahhh, a relaxing rampage
A call out for a dangerous person(s), turns into a 15 minute, high speed pursuit, with a helicopter overhead and multiple agencies responding. Cars smoking and shots fired! Someone's going to jail and it's not me... A couple extra mods, and it's a good cop sim.
Don't get stabbed... Fun Stuff.
(But when I do play sp, no rage hook, I'm Trreevvoorr...)
if there wasn't GTAO, it would be pretty quiet around GTA5 now.
Either a mod is out of date and no longer relevant or I'm stuck waiting for script hook to update. I eventually just got tired of it, after a time where the s hook took a month or two to update.
Now I'm just hoping that Rockstar will be interested in at least adding a few things from story into an invite-only session.
That'd be good enough for me.
