Unfixable Out of Game Memory Error/Crash
Hi there,

I'm having issues loading into GTA. I am getting the 'ERR_MEM_EMBEDDEDALLOC_ALLOC' (out of game memory) error every time I start the game. I get the error shortly after I select Story or Online mode. The issue started happening about a week ago (I believe this coincides with a GTA Update).

Other than usual Windows updates and installing Ghost Recon: Wildlands, nothing has changed with my PC. I have been playing GTA for months without any issues, and all my other games are continuing to play as usual. This cannot be a hardware issue.

I've tried searching the web for existing threads on the issue, all of which don't seem to have an actual solution, so I've tried everything I could possibly think of, here's a list of all the things I can remember (in no particular order).

- Restarted PC
- Restarted Steam
- Verified Game Install using Steam
- Deleted Documents/Rockstar Games
- Reinstalled the game (Multiple times)
- Checked for Windows Updates
- Installed latest driver updates
- Completely uninstalled graphics driver and reinstalled
- Ran the game while driver was uninstalled, same error
- Completely uninstalled graphics driver using DDU and reinstalled using a direct downloaded driver from Nvidia website
- Re-installed Microsoft C++
- Re-installed Microsoft Visual Studio
- Assigning more virtual memory
- Ran multiple programs in Admin mode
- Ran the game on the lowest settings
- Ran the game in safe mode
- Tried different gameconfig(s)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. This error has come literally out of no where. I've never modded my GTA and I've never had any issues prior to this point. Again, nothing on my PC has changed other than the two things listed above. I'm totally lost on what to do here.

CPU: AMD Athlon x4 860K
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeFore 750
RAM: 16GB
OS: Windows 10 (Latest)
Game Version: Steam

I'm submitting this into R* Support at the same time as posting this thread.

I just want to get back to playing, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Threads on internet don't have an actual solution? Sorta suprised. Well... around here -
DDU'n the gpu drivers IS the most common fix. You covered that. Was it in normal or SAFEMODE windows? I have seen different results - safemode having much more success.
Assigned more virtual memory - covered (also means virtual memory exists).

Uninstalling/reinstalling doesn't cover mods/non-vanilla files (I've had 2 "my bro" in last 10 days).
You said you don't use mods but I'm suggesting this anyways-
Steam version only - Open gtav folder. Delete anything NOT .rpf file or folder. Verify cache.

Not sure if you covered vcredists / directx-
Vcredists - uninstall/reinstall (steam/steamapps/common/gtav/_commonredist/vcredist/2012)
For directx - I'd grab this .bat and run as admin. (edit and look if you want - just moves files)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rJvafaYjKDOZia5IBMeeIOU5sVZPfzKW/view
Then grab this - run as admin to reinstall directx.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

I'd open msconfig - services - hide ms-services - disable the rest. Same for startup. Apply/restart.
You only have 1 gpu? 2? Onboard? I'd check that you are plugged into correct gpu too.

If this is out of nowhere, and every standard fix for the error doesn't work... going to have to narrow it down, doublecheck, or poke around for the "new" fix for an old problem. I'd run sfc /scannow in an admin command prompt just for giggles. Adwcleaner from toolslib too - for giggles. -.-

The gtav update - was last tuesday - if you call that an update. An actual change in files/etc was back around mid-March.

Steam also says you don't currently own gtav. Are you not posting with the playing account?

What does "different gameconfigs" mean? Settings.xml? Or gameconfig.xml... (modding).

Heya. In one of my re-install attempts I went to the steam folder and insured it no longer existed, then deleted the files in Documents/Rockstar Games as well. Confirmed there were no GTA V files on my PC at all.

(There are also only two people that have access to the PC, myself and my partner, neither of us would have installed any third party mods :P)

Did try messing around with vcredists, C++ etc they were listed on a R* support post. Didn't help

Tried the services thing, sorry, forgot to list that.

The issue is occuring on my partners PC, I'm the one doing the diagnostics so just posted it on my account so that I get all the notifications. No difference in terms of fixing the issue.

Yes, and no - some directions would changed based on R* vs Steam version.
Just being sure - that is all.

I gotcha. No worries.

I've been talking to a support agent from Rockstar for almost 2 hours now. Have yet to find a solution. This is unreal.

Check your Pagefile settings, had a similar problem with my wife's PC and a low memory error because I had set pagefile to manual and had a custom pagefile set that GTA 5 didn't agree with. Switching back to having Windows automatically controlling it fixed the problem.

Go to Control Panel, then choose System, Choose advanced system setting and click Performance, find Virtual Memory and select "Change". Be sure the option for Windows to control pagefige is ticked, click OK and Windows will tell you to restart.

That was how we had it originally. A guide told us to try setting it manually, we did, nothing changed. I'll try disabling it entirely, if that fails, I'll just set it back to windows again.

ERR_MEM_EMBEDDEDALLOC_ALLOC

I know you have tried a couple of these steps already, but please repeat.

1. Make sure that the computer's operating system software is the latest version.
You can find "Windows Update" in the Start menu or Control Panel.

2. Check if the video driver is the latest version.
Remove the previous version of the driver completely, restart the computer, and install the updated driver so that it does not crash when you install or run the game. Please refer to the following support site for information on the latest version of available drivers and where they are available.

3. Confirm that you can run the game as an administrator.
Some game titles, including our games, may not be fully accessible to the gaming system unless you are running with administrative privileges.

4. Disable screen overlay, recording or sharing software.
Some of the features of this software may interfere with the smooth communication of computer components.

5. Disable the anti-virus program or firewall software.
Some computer protection programs may interfere with the activation of our games or the smooth connection of services. Therefore, please try to run the game with the exception of our game titles among the software firewall targets. If this does not solve the problem, please stop the protection program temporarily. If you still have problems after that, please be sure to completely remove the software because it will still run in the background after the protection program is stopped.

6. Ensure that the game is installed in the directory at the normal execution speed.
If you install a game on an external hard drive, the speed at which data moves is slower than the optimal USB device speed. Therefore, we recommend installing the game on an internal hard drive.

7. Disable sound acceleration.

Some game titles may conflict with accelerated sound hardware. This can happen because of a drive for a particular sound card or for other reasons. You can disable sound acceleration by following these steps:

1. When the 'Run' window is opened by pressing the Windows key + 'R' key, enter 'Control Panel' without quotes and press the Enter key. 2. Go to [Hardware and Sound]> [Sound]. 3. Find the device that is set as the default device and click [Properties]. 4. Go to the [Advanced tab]. 5. Set the default format to 44.1khz and 16bit. 6. Click Apply, and then click OK to close the dialog box. 7. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box. 8. Restart Windows.
8. Reinstall Social Club Launcher manually.

If the Launcher is damaged, it may cause a crash during the game or disconnect our service, such as activation services of our game. The latest version of the Social Club Launcher can be downloaded from the database link below.
{LINK REMOVED}

9. If you are using a game with the Steam version, please check if you have a game cache.

Right-click GTAV in the game library, select Properties from the menu> Local Files tab and click Check Game Cache Integrity button>
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

10. Please delete the game completely and reinstall it.

5) I'll try disabling anti-virus, but it shouldn't have any effect on a memory issue. Firewall won't have any effect.
6) Done
7) Don't have any sound related hardware, all sound is handled by motherboard. Nothing has changed with any of it recently, will be unrelated.

Done this too, didn't fix.
