It's a Sandbox most Gamer's have and are familiar with.
It's not uncommon for me to meet other Gamer's doing other activities and then gravitate to GTA5 at some point.
It sometimes is the gaming common denominator between Friends, with different interest in general.
It's standard gaming fare.

Also in addition, there is tennis, golf, arm wrestling, treasure hunting, racing and flying events, buy real estate and lots more.
If you haven't played the single player campaign, it's worth the store price in that itself, but don't expect an amazing experience online unless you learn how to pause and resume your game process (for 10 seconds) to go solo and invite friends. People can still join the public session, but generally it's a bit of a better experience. If someone comes in and wrecks the session, rinse and repeat the session pause and resume.
