However, in GTA you also need to precisely fire your weapon while driving, which is much better done with a mouse, which makes driving with the keyboard acceptable.
In GTAV You can seamlessly switch from keyboard/mouse to controller and back, so you can enjoy the advantages of both.
So, yes, having a decent controller is highly suggested.
I'm in a vehicle 99% of the time so it does matter, a lot as explained here.
I typically play with a Steam controller, but you can't generally get those anymore. The XBox controller works fine tho.
Keyboard input is limited to "is this key down or not."
Controller input is "how far is the stick being pressed on each axis."
This matters. A lot.

I don't care about people, I care about ideas. Our big disconnect is over shark cards and microtransactions, and not much else.
Ask anyone who races, they will tell you about people with controllers. It's a fact they are far better for vehicles.
Share what? All the lap times are ruined by modders and I don't race, I'm not into bumper cars.
