The Calico is based on a Toyota Celica, which was one of the fastest and most famous rally cars of the early 90s, but we have the later 1994 model. I'm guessing Rockstar was being cute by making the Calico significantly better because with that same model, Toyota got busted for using an ingenious cheat to gain an edge on the competition.
That bit of motorsports history is pretty obscure, and again we're doing street races, but I digress.
It's not even really that the Calico is fast. The Jester RR seems to be faster in a straight line, but these races favor sharp turns, and every other car has terrible handling while the Calico is AWD.
The race tracks they chose are also the issue for the other vehicles.
It's all irrelevant anyways because if Rockstar stays consistent, one of these drip feed vehicles will be better than the Calico so that they get us to spend even more money. It might just be next week's Pfister Comet S2 (Porsche 992). Get ready to spend another 2 mill if you want to have the best car, even Calico owners should know this.
We're still in that phase where it's relatively unknown why the Calico is the best vehicle from the initial lineup.
So what ends up happening is the first turn hits and there's a Calico pileup because people don't really know when to break and accelerate around corners when going as fast as the Calico does. I noticed that, similar to the Itali GTO, when you hit a bump, you go even faster, sometimes faster than you anticipate, and these street races tend to have a lot of those.
That contributes to a lot of people thinking that the Calico is just uncontrollable. It's that kind of information that the game doesn't tell you.
Another issue that I'm seeing with this update is that people are actually taking their stanced versions into races. I don't know if they're aware that your tire options from freemode carry over into the races, and racing any stanced vehicle is going to feel miserable because the moment you hit any kind of turn you'll spin out like crazy.

they were also banned from WRC for creative engineering of bypassing the restrictor plate.
What??? lol That's a good thing, I'd rather they use real cars.
Genuinely sad how many people miss this aspect of the series and the humor behind it, and in the end of the day I can't blame the vehicle designers for not trying anymore, considering it's this easy to please the JDM obsessed children.
They also won't ever use real cars, because fundamental aspects of GTA gameplay (and artstyle) prevent it; damage, explosions, shooting, or the fact that you are free to steal any car, why do you think AAA games with licensed cars often lack any (or have a painfully simple) damage model?
Yeah which is why they should use real cars, because their creative mashups look weird.
Honestly I don't even know what JDM is and I'm not a child. They never put much effort into these cars to begin with so I don't know what you mean by "anymore", can you point me to a car that they put actual effort into?
Lies. There are real car mods and they work just fine. It's not hard to create a damage model for those. I disagree with your assessment of the situation as do most people, people want real cars and if they want those of us with a brain to open our wallets for them, they are going to have to provide a higher quality product.
Get rid of the advanced handling flags for starters, literally nobody likes them and they don't do what they were designed to do, stop curb boosting. I'd be happy if they started there because 9 out of 10 cars drive like crap.
Edit: This is what GTA could look like, if you are telling me that what we have is better...lol.
