How do I find main missions on GTA online?
I just want to follow the main storyline but I dont see any indicators of where to go or the next mission. Appreciate the help.

There really isn't a main storyline so to speak for GTA Online, though the various heists come rather close for having some meat on the bone plot wise. Essentially there's a lot of "free" DLC content that's been added over the years, routinely having at least small stories, and in all significant cases I can think of those are connected to a property of sorts if you want to serve as leader (same applies for cargo businesses, which don't really have a plot and are essentially grinding to pay for upgrades and earn more money to cover your investment).

You can help others who own the properties to get a feel for things and decide if it's something you want to buy into yourself. You'll get paid some money and earn experience, just not as much money typically as the leader, unless they're in a generous mood. Since I'm guessing you're rather new, I'd point you to the OG heists available through the high end apartments as having some decent plotting and interesting characters, which also have some very respectable money bonuses for doing them the first time. For grander storytelling, I feel like you'd also enjoy the Doomsday series of heists, which are connected to the Facility property, saving the world from a sinister high-tech threat, but I'd also caution you that they can be frustrating when you have limited heath and lack access to the better armor types.

Getting started is confusing af, that's for sure. It's not as straight forward as SP. I stumbled across this series a little over a month ago. It's been a grind but it works. Might be better methods but this is the one I used.

Appreciate your time and the detailed response man, very helpful.

By properties and getting into them, what is that about exactly?

you could start with contact jobs while calling all the npc's like simeon, trevor, lester, gerald, madrazo, etc until you reach rank12.
It is heist time so buy an high end appartment and go for the original heists, good luck getting 3 goons for the job.
You better stick together with them for the whole 5 heists to get a lovely 2 million bonus from all in order and finishing them with the same team awards.

Next project going big against crazy ecomaniac nerd, so buy a facility and do the doomsday heists.

You saved the world after you helped to nearly destroy it and nobody will ever take notice of it, so it is time to have some fun at the casino.

It is up to you if you want to do some business for Ms Agatha first
a lovely set of 6 missions waiting for you with tiny cash award rewards or go straight for the arcade and prepare for the big casino heists.

After all this fun it is time to dream real big, so go and buy a old russian submarine and rob a druglord.

now lets return to the roots and buy the latest tuning garage and do some good old mini heists while 2 black npc's bloke way to often the mf word into your ear, if they won't speak about sex.

you could also visit benny in his garage and do some gang related jobs for him.

you robbed banks, a casino and a druglord now it is maybe time to buy a yacht to unlock another set of tiny mission.
There is also the option to buy a MOC to get access to a set of militarizd themed missions, go for the terrorbyte which gives more control over businesses and access to another set of minimissions. you could also visit your bikershack to do some bikertheme stuff.
Go for the hangar if you want to do some aviation content.

Basically Rockstar's desire is that players buy sharkcards to get access to new fun content (you can also play missions, heists and run cargo to accomplish the same) and so when adding a new DLC there's typically a new property added that has a starting price of roughly $1m (plus optional upgrades and cosmetic changes that can push the price far higher - IIRC a nightclub can cost up to $16m with all the bells and whistles) which is the hub of sorts for the new content, like owning the giant nuclear submarine (Kosatka) allows you to be leader on the Cayo Perico island heist (an excellent money maker and one that can be done completely solo). Without owning a property you can still be invited by other players to help with the work there, essentially serving as a way to try before you buy.

Each property often has a living space and personal vehicle garage, sometimes also a mod shop for changing/upgrading your vehicles, but those details vary, such as the living quarters being an optional add-on for the Facility (owning the bedroom allows you to spawn there). Many properties have location choices, except the Casino Penthouse, and it was typical in the past that the cheaper priced locations make the work harder. For example, the Bunker at the far north end of the map included with the Starter Pack is likely to cause frustration because you have to do a lot more driving (often with enemies and maybe even other players attacking you), which is intentional to nudge players into moving to a more expensive location that's easier to deal with.

Part of the reason I pointed to the OG heists is that a high end apartment can be purchased for as little as about $200k (Del Perro Heights building) and once you do those heists the first time through you'll have earned back the apartment cost and made some reasonable profit. Most other properties require you to play the associated content multiple times to cover what you initially spent, especially when important upgrades are involved.

Edit: Some properties to avoid because the associated content won't pay for the initial investment are the Arena Workshop (a money black hole), Casino Penthouse, and Yacht. Only get those when you're a proper tycoon and ideally they're on steep discount.

Appreciate it very much man, love the effort you put into building a timeline for me to experiment with.

Oh, got it. I appreciate the breakdown man, I feel like I have a clear idea now of how the online mode is structured and you probably prevented me from making mistakes that would slowdown my progression.

I'll buy the Del Perro Heights building and then go after the submarine. Thanks again!

The main story does "continue" but in an odd way, its really got nothing to do with the main protags but we see them and get references about them. Like trevor and lamar is shown completely and based on their missions and heists it seems they are still doing their drug businesses. Lester is also a key figure and even refers to the story many times. But the story is really about your gta protag and the different stuff they do every session in gtao
